Incredibly painful sore throat. Help 😩

Currently travelling in Singapore for work so am in a hotel room wishing I was home and having a little cry.

Woke up a few days ago feeling a bit rough - mainly cold symptoms, that night was awful (temp, violent shivers) the next morning woke up with a sore throat that gradually got worse until 3am the next morning where it’s so painful and swollen I can’t swallow and have had to spit saliva out a few times. 3 days later and it’s keeping me awake at night, making me cry and feels like it’s cut into a 100 pieces and I’m swallowing vinegar. I’ve never felt anything quite like it

Ive tried Diflam lozenges, gargling with salt water, usual pain relief. Does anyone have any magical tips or tricks? (I’ve had my tonsils removed so unlikely to be tonsillitis)

It's not covid is it? Have you tested? Get some salt and gargle warm salt water. Fruit pastels are great for sore throats too. Hope you feel better soon.

Turmerictolly · 15/03/2024 20:32

Can you/the hotel arrange to see a doctor? I think the health service in Singapore is meant to be very good.

Oh and carrot juice 👍

I had this last Christmas-it felt like I was swallowing glass and think I woke up every time I swallowed as it hurt so much, so didn’t sleep properly for days. Difflam throat spray helped a bit but not loads.

user8800 · 15/03/2024 20:33

Ask the hotel to arrange a Dr

Ukholidaysaregreat · 15/03/2024 20:34

Think you might need antibiotics. See what the hotel can organise for you.

spottedinthewilds · 15/03/2024 20:38

Sip tiny zips of ice ice cold water.

I hope you feel better soon

idontlikealdi · 15/03/2024 20:39

Presumably as you're travelling for work you can get at least on line with a gp who can issue a prescription to the nearest pharmacy

WhoTurnedTheLightsOff · 15/03/2024 20:46

Could it be quinsy?

catsnore · 15/03/2024 20:48

If you can access a pharmacy at all ask for throat spray to numb the pain. When I had worst sore throat of my life (was strep throat) this was the only thing that helped. I'm unsure of antibiotic rules in Singapore but you may need some if it is something like strep throat.

Greentomatoes21 · 15/03/2024 20:54

Can you see down your throat? I have had my tonsils removed but still suffer from sore throats. The ones that need antibiotics seem to be very obvious to the eye - whiteish/yellowy/grey spots or patches all over the throat, along with swelling and the usual redness. Viral ones are generally just the latter two (ie no white spots or patches). Both are intensely painful.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 15/03/2024 20:57

Antihistamines might reduce the swelling but they're a two-edged sword as really you need your histamines to be fighting the infection.

Pigeonqueen · 15/03/2024 21:01

You can get different types of throat infections other than tonsillitis. Sounds like you may need antibiotics.

carkerpartridge · 15/03/2024 21:02

Gargle with soluble aspirin dissolved in a bit of water.

Gargle with soluble aspirin dissolved in a bit of water.

I was going to suggest that. Small sips, good gargle, then swallow. It has a bit of pain-killing property up in the throat while you're gargling it around. When I had Covid the throat was the worst symptom and gargling aspirin was the best relief. I hope it goes soon.

VanillaImpulse · 15/03/2024 21:25

Yep, 900mg soluble aspirin gargle and swallow

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 16/03/2024 02:03

Thanks all. Will go and raid the local pharmacy

Cocodamol or anything with codeine in it.

donteatthedaisies0 · 16/03/2024 03:13

Difflam mouth wash definitely , was given this by hospital ,sore mouth with chemo .

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 16/03/2024 04:26

I have drugs and mouthwashes and sprays, ice lollies, soft food (I was going for soup but it’s 32c and that’s a bit far!) and some juice. I’ve had a little cry and I finish work in 20 minutes and will go and sleep for the rest of the afternoon and hopefully this will help!

thanks all

It sounds like hand foot and mouth disease to me. Starts with a very high fever and then you get little spots in your throat that are so, so painful. When I had it I only had a couple of tiny spots on my hands, wouldn't even have noticed them if I didn't know it was HFMD.

Tbh nothing helped, the medicated lozenges gave some relief so I'd suck one of those and take ibuprofen and paracetamol before trying to eat.

You can call to room service to send you up chicken porridge which will be the easiest thing to eat. It's a savoury rice porridge common in Asia. Tell them you are sick and want porridge and they'll know what you want.

I'm in SG OP - it's a small place, feel free to DM me if you need anything. The hotel will be able to get you most stuff including a doctor if you need it. The healthcare here is excellent and very proactive.

Resurrecting this thread as I'm in excruciating pain from the sore throat😩

I've tried paracetmol, Difflam and even my husbands codeine tabs but nothing is touching the pain!!

A few have mentioned soluble aspirin, where do I buy this??

Covidwoes · 26/11/2024 20:05

@Lavendar01 I had a sore throat like that once during my second bout of Covid. It was awful! Soluble aspirin did help. I bought it at pharmacy.
Do you have any white spots? If so, it could be tonsillitis. Pharmacists can treat for that now, so it may be worth a visit to a pharmacy for them to have a look and advise.
