Hear me out….do you think you could perform an appendicitis if you had to?

Let’s say you had 48hrs to practice

Plus a surgical dummy to practice on

And books (you don’t have the internet)

And all the equipment you’d need

AND the person is going to die if you DONT do it

a) Do you think you could pull it off?

*surgeons of MN please come and tell us if the average person could or not given the above

** you get an assistant to suction and stuff

How would I know they had appendicitis though?

Chaoseverywhere · 15/03/2024 17:52

Yes no problem

AllBlackEverything · 15/03/2024 17:52

Well, if they are going to die anyway, I'd give it a good go.

Good question, good question

Let’s just say you know

Sorry I’m just really irritated by a programme where a good character dies because they couldn’t pull a simple appendectomy off 👀

Not a chance

BroccoliHighkicks · 15/03/2024 17:54

Are you reading The Stand by Stephen King?

Sockdolager · 15/03/2024 17:54

What are you using for pain relief? Is there an anaesthetist, or is this some kind of Age of Sail scenario where they get dosed with rum and ether and bite down on a stick?

No I’m watching last man on earth and I’m really bloody annoyed!

OP posts:
MadamVastra · 15/03/2024 17:54

I'd give it a go as long as I could have a stiff drink or two first

FacingTheWall · 15/03/2024 17:55

I reckon I’ve watched enough episodes of Grey’s Anatomy to give it a go.

sarahc336 · 15/03/2024 17:55

I feel this is the most I've thought about something all week op 😂😂😂

Year sure. I’ve watched 13 seasons of Grey’s. Not much surgery I couldn’t do, bar one of those tricksy brain tumour ones perhaps

SerendipityJane · 15/03/2024 17:54

No - excluding that from the running. He was already a surgeon. However he did it on himself which just makes me think you could definitely pull it off on someone else

There’s a reason George was called 007 - he cut the purse strings!

I'd like to think that I could, but I know that everyone's insides are basically a mass of wobbly purple bits and blood and I'd worry that I'd cut off something vital instead of the appendix. But I'd be game for a go, even if it would result in someone being basically hollow afterwards.

Ettubrutus · 15/03/2024 17:58

They should make this a VR game.

I’d buy it

Giggorata · 15/03/2024 17:58

i would try a tracheotomy if I absolutely had to, but there are so many other things that could cause abdominal pain, I’m not sure.
Plus the risk of subsequent infection and peritonitis.
Having said that, I read about the rebound tenderness for diagnosis and if there was a Grays Anatomy handy…(the book, not the programme)

I applaud your pursuit of the exact 😀

Beezknees · 15/03/2024 17:59

I highly doubt it. Biology is not a strong point of mine.

Autumn1990 · 15/03/2024 17:59

No but I have a couple of relatives who would be able to.
