I’m a bit sick of reading food threads about how a loaf of Kingsmill is a dangerous public health risk, and how Peppermint from Wimbledon would be the size of a bus if she ate more than seventy three grains of rice in a sitting. Oh, and how I’m frankly letting my kids down by having fruit yoghurts in my fridge.

So, for those of us who read Nigella in bed, lick the drips from their kids’ ice cream and understand the mental health benefits of cheese after dinner, here is a joyful, judgement free thread about the foods we love. Whole meals, exotic experiments, or low-grade confectionary scavenged from the secret treats drawer. If it brings you joy, it’s all good.

For me, I love seaside and mountain food. Fish and chips by the sea, massive seafood platters (with chips and garlic mayonnaise). Fondue round a table with wine and friends (and dangerous quantities of cured meat). Also, my husband’s beef Wellington, sausages in the garden stuffed into baguettes. And tea and a Crunchie bar on the sofa, in a house of sleeping children.

Please share….

I've somehow gone off crumpets but I do love heavily- buttered hot cross buns, with Lurpak butter

CommeIlFaut · 14/03/2024 22:00

SnackPocket about 7? 🙂 I’ve had Simply Nigella my bedside table for two weeks now and drift off to sleep dreaming of her amazing food. I thought it was about time to turn my Nigella fantasies into reality.

Yes, none of that 'unsalted'

Too right, what the fuck is that about??

My dad switched to spreadable unsalted and it’s utterly joyless. I remember Nigel Slater saying one of life’s greatest pleasures was a fresh warm crusty white loaf with a pack of good salted butter, and he could demolish the whole loaf in one sitting. I don’t think I’d struggle either.

Ooh yes. I’ve been having them for breakfast. They are supposed to be for the kids’ after school snack. I can recommend Waitrose apple hot cross buns if you can contemplate your hot cross buns being interfered with.

Speaking of crusty white bread, agree on the fish finger sandwich. Tartare sauce on one side, ketchup on the other.

Moonwatcher1234 · 14/03/2024 22:07

Fish finger sandwich with a slice of plastic cheese and a potato waffle. Ketchup and mayo on top and I add a couple of cucumber slices - 5 a day and all that.

Aldi are doing raspberry and white chocolate hot cross buns at the moment 😍 cut in half, toasted and buttered....heaven!

Moier · 15/03/2024 00:24

Roast potatoes just for a snack.
Eggs bacon sausage tinned tomatoes. Fried egg baked beans . Fried bread.. mug of tea..😋
Cheesecake with fresh pouring cream

AyeupDuck · 15/03/2024 00:25

Need to add Oatcakes, as in the big soft ones from Stoke not the flat little parsimonious biscuits with grilled cheddar and bacon then all rolled up.

Old school sponge cakes with custard like the yellow sponge with jam and coconut on or sugar puffs with chocolate and green custard, basically 1970’s school dinner puddings.

bluecomputerscreen · 15/03/2024 06:21

a warm hot cross bun with melty blue cheese...

or very simply garlic bread. the kind you get in the chiller that you bake at home.

This morning, by popular teenage demand we are having porridge (made with milk), maple syrup and nuts. I avert my eyes when DS pours the maple syrup.

It’s a minor faff as we need to leave the house early, but it makes my teens morning.

Edited

I used to love porridge when i was a child. Maple syrup is probably better than the sugar I put on mine though.

Then, I discovered bacon 😉

Chicken flavour instant noodles, in between two slices of generously buttered thick white hovis bread 🤤

<<rubs thighs>>

Can I also suggest a construction of:
Toast
Ham
Chicken noodles cooked until stodgy
Top with cheese
Grill until melted

Heaven!!

Here to report that bourbon whiskey is an excellent addition to chilli brisket. Can’t go wrong with Nigella. It’s been in the oven for six hours, and the house smells amazing. I’ve thought of little else since lunchtime.

Ready to be served with rice, homemade tortilla chips (co-op had run out!), guacomole and lots of sour cream. Extra chilli for them that wants. And much lager.

Anyone get the feeling Tim Spector is a man who rarely cooks with whiskey?

Also, does anyone else love warm almond croissants with raspberry jam?

DH says I’m weird but I reason it’s basically a French Bakewell tart, and all the better for it.

What a lovely thread and just what I needed while going through the shopping list 😁

Garlic mushrooms on perfectly crunchy bruschetta.
A perfectly cooked slightly less than medium rump steak with fried egg, chips and grilled mushroom (sensing a theme here!)
Falafel from Falafel King in Bristol (anyone know if it’s still there!?) with a side of vine leaves and fries with garlic mayo.
Chilli prawn linguine.
Mussels in white wine sauce with sourdough bread and proper butter for mopping.
Lamb saag, rice and a peshwari naan. If I’m especially hungry a started of tandoori chicken to share first.

KohlaParasaurus · 15/03/2024 19:44

This thread is an absolute droolfest!

Macaroni pie with chips, loads of salt and vinegar. Perfect at the end of a long hike or bike ride.
Any pudding or pie that can be enhanced with custard. Or gravy.
Pulled pork.
Black pudding.
Just one square of really good quality dark chocolate Guylian seashells and Lindt balls.
Cottage cheese salad.

I’ve never tried this but it sounds delicious. I am definitely going to try this!

I recently bought an interesting looking snack from the world foods aisle in Sainsbury's. They are basically Indian Nik Naks - my mouth is on fire but I can't stop eating them. They are delicious.

xsquared · 17/03/2024 18:04

I had a Saturday to myself, so yesterday I bought a portion of chips from Bell's and had them with fried eggs and garlic sauce.

Even had some leftover to refresh today after running 22 miles.
