Fellow food lovers! Bored of all this talk of UPF, calorie deficits and death by bacon? Come and share the foods that bring you joy…

I’m a bit sick of reading food threads about how a loaf of Kingsmill is a dangerous public health risk, and how Peppermint from Wimbledon would be the size of a bus if she ate more than seventy three grains of rice in a sitting. Oh, and how I’m frankly letting my kids down by having fruit yoghurts in my fridge.

So, for those of us who read Nigella in bed, lick the drips from their kids’ ice cream and understand the mental health benefits of cheese after dinner, here is a joyful, judgement free thread about the foods we love. Whole meals, exotic experiments, or low-grade confectionary scavenged from the secret treats drawer. If it brings you joy, it’s all good.

For me, I love seaside and mountain food. Fish and chips by the sea, massive seafood platters (with chips and garlic mayonnaise). Fondue round a table with wine and friends (and dangerous quantities of cured meat). Also, my husband’s beef Wellington, sausages in the garden stuffed into baguettes. And tea and a Crunchie bar on the sofa, in a house of sleeping children.

Please share….

I do love a bacon sandwich, but can't seem to find decent bacon any more. The rashers are very thin, even when they say thick cut. And white stuff comes out when you fry it.

I yearn for the days when you watched the bacon being sliced. Long time ago!

Streaky bacon fried really crisp is the only bacon that works for me these days.

As someone who reached 60 without ever having a sweet tooth, I have now developed a cake habit. I used to bake for DC but never ate it. Now I do, and it doesn't have to be child friendly.
I love a sticky cake and always bung some ground almond in. My ultimate cake is a sticky chocolate cake with Russian buttercream made with condensed milk. With a bucket sized cup of tea.

IClaudine · 14/03/2024 18:45

Oh and agree OP, all the fish and all the seafood. Love it.

Try Denhay bacon. I get it from waitrose. No white watery stuff.

Pasties
Pies
Chips
Flapjack
Pastry tartletty things, any filling will do
White bread and butter
Crisps

...not all on the same plate though, I have standards 😏

Threewheeler1 · 14/03/2024 18:51

And oh my word, steamed treacle pudding and custard...

BouleDeSuif · 14/03/2024 18:53

I just had jam sponge and custard.

louderthan · 14/03/2024 18:55

McDonald's sausage egg muffin with three hash browns
KFC tower burger box meal with extra piece of chicken and hot wings
Massive greasy spoon fry up
Chicken shish or shawarma kebab with garlic mayo, chilli sauce, loads of salad and cheesy chips
Rare fillet steak with onion rings, bearnaise sauce, tomato, onion and rocket salad
Cheese straws, olives and a big glass of dry white wine
Pizza Express Fiorentina

Yep, that'll do nicely!

I work on the theory that there is nothing that cannot be improved by using bread as a vessel I which to eat it

Fair enough!
Does the bread go soggy? Anyway, it’s something I might try sometime now I know it’s a thing.

louderthan · 14/03/2024 18:59

A pub roast dinner washed down with several pints
Salade Nicoise with fresh tuna cooked rare
Seafood linguine

louderthan · 14/03/2024 19:00

This is a wonderful thread

egowise · 14/03/2024 19:06

A massive bowl of proper carbonara
Steak with stilton or peppercorn sauce
A whole baked camembert, with chunks of air fried ciabatta covered in olive oil and salt
Crisps, specifically of the kettle variety
Bacon, thick on thick buttered, white bread with ketchup

I could be here for hours, but I will finish with a good sausage roll!

I am currently dieting. Got a diabetes shock at Xmas, and was given 12 weeks to lose weight and see if that lowered my blood sugar levels. I've cut out all snacks, all sweets, I only eat 3 meals a day, and I've gone lower (not no) carb.

I'm doing really well and have lots shit loads of weight - but Christ it's boring. I've had a few food related meltdowns when I've really wanted something (but not had it) and it seems I'm a simple soul:

Tescos strawberry trifle - meant for 4, just for me and the dog.
Salt and Vinegar crisps - preferably the large sharing bag of Walkers extra crunch (and to put some in a marmite sandwich on white bread).
Pork sausages in onion gravy with buttery cheesy mash.
Fish and chips and curry sauce from the chippy.
Cheese on toast
Bacon Sandwich, crusty white or tiger bread, loads of butter, red sauce to dip.
Lemon Drizzle Cake.

EmilyPlay · 14/03/2024 19:09

A big Mac, large salty fries and BBQ sauce for dipping.

CommeIlFaut · 14/03/2024 19:10

There are so many delicious things listed here that should be on my list.

On Sunday, for Mother’s Day pudding,I had tarte Tartin at our local posh pub. It had buttery, crunchy caramelised edges. And caramel sauce.

Then I finished DD’s cheese platter- Baron Bigod, Suffolk Gold and Norfolk Dapple.

I was a very happy woman.

I love bread in all its forms. No, I don’t eat it every day because I’m 40-odd and can’t afford the calories, BUT I cannot get with this ‘bread is evil’ nonsense.

Bread is delicious. It’s one of life’s pleasures. I bought a fresh, crusty white loaf on Sunday and had Mothers Day breakfast with fried eggs and a big doorstop slice. It was heavenly.

JaneIves · 14/03/2024 19:24

@BigDogEnergy Aldi often have nicer noodles on sale, the onion chicken ones are my daughter's fave (once every couple of weeks for the pearl clutchers!)
You can buy the Buldak noodles on Amazon.... 😬

AncientSkaterGirl · 14/03/2024 19:27

Oh and I forgot butter pie, I had the most amazing one at the weekend that I got from the local farm shop - the pastry was just amazing!

soupfiend · 14/03/2024 19:28

Im probably going to regret this in months to come but Ive started cooking with a lot of fat. I mean a lot of fat

So no 'tablespoon of oil' to sweat off the onions, its no where near enough, Im talking glugs and glugs of the stuff. Cooking aubergine in tons of oil, so its silky and unctuous, cooking leeks and spinach in LOTS of butter. The difference in taste is amazing.

Inspired by a recent holiday I was thinking my god theres so much oil in this stuff, this is basically why restaurant food, foreign food and takeaways taste so nice, its full of fat.

I love fat unfortunately. I think my acid reflex is made worse by it though.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 14/03/2024 19:32

Instant noodles (buldak brand are the best), boiled half milk and half water topped with cheese. Creamy tat food..

Incredible.

NeverForgiveMyself · 14/03/2024 19:38

I've invented (for me anyway) cottage pie filling with tartiflette topping replacing mash. Absolutely delicious.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 14/03/2024 19:39

JaneIves · 14/03/2024 18:06

Another noodle sandwich lover!

I love instant noodles, I've been trying different ones from my local pan Asian supermarket. The Buldak carbonara ones are my current favourite. Death by MSG no doubt but I try to offset by filling my noodle bowls with spring onions/spinach/bok Choi etc.

Another noodle lover here. Finish the noodles and slurp the broth out of the bowl.

Egg and chips

Small two bite size hot cross buns from Waitrose.

Any pudding, steamed or crumbles with custard preferred

soupfiend · 14/03/2024 19:44

I couldnt even make a list. Like another poster said, from the finest fine dining, to a greasy spoon caff, I will eat almost anything and enjoy it.

I do make most of my own food but Im not into all the UPF drama. I dont eat artificial sweetners however, but then Im not frightened of sugar, I just dont have that much because Im more of a savoury person
