I’m a bit sick of reading food threads about how a loaf of Kingsmill is a dangerous public health risk, and how Peppermint from Wimbledon would be the size of a bus if she ate more than seventy three grains of rice in a sitting. Oh, and how I’m frankly letting my kids down by having fruit yoghurts in my fridge.

So, for those of us who read Nigella in bed, lick the drips from their kids’ ice cream and understand the mental health benefits of cheese after dinner, here is a joyful, judgement free thread about the foods we love. Whole meals, exotic experiments, or low-grade confectionary scavenged from the secret treats drawer. If it brings you joy, it’s all good.

For me, I love seaside and mountain food. Fish and chips by the sea, massive seafood platters (with chips and garlic mayonnaise). Fondue round a table with wine and friends (and dangerous quantities of cured meat). Also, my husband’s beef Wellington, sausages in the garden stuffed into baguettes. And tea and a Crunchie bar on the sofa, in a house of sleeping children.

Please share….

I feel this is the thread for my mother’s roast chicken ( she’s 98 and still enjoying her food)….
Ingredients : 1 chicken (any type, cheap or free range happy bunny)
100g butter
300 ml double cream
Salt and pepper
Roast the chicken, on a rack, slathered in the butter (I usually do an hour on its breast then turn it over for 20 minutes) with plenty of salt and pepper.
Remove chicken to rest. Pop roasting tin on a medium heat and pour in the cream. Bring to a simmer whilst stirring so all the yummy brown bits dissolve.
Serve with whatever you want, everything is improved by Averell’s gravy. If the gravy splits add a tiny drop of hot water - you do not want to dilute the creaminess.

Bread in all its forms.

At the moment DD and I are obsessed with a focaccia you can get from Ocado. We slice it, drizzle on pesto dressing, add tomato and mozzarella and then put under the grill. Amazing.

Buttery, creamy mashed potato with onion gravy and posh sausages.

Cinnamon buns with a cup of tea.

Butter.

Butter on bread, toast, crackers, jacket spuds……butter should be spread liberally on everything. You need to see teeth marks. You should even have salted butter on a scone that you then add jam and thick clotted cream to.

Yes, none of that 'unsalted'

Mmmmmmm. Is garlic ever added to this delight?

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 14/03/2024 19:49

Oh god so many!
Fried egg sandwich, thick white bread, salted butter and ketchup.
Cantonese style chicken with egg fried rice from the Chinese
A proper Indian curry
Carte Dor ice cream
Crisps
Maltesers
Baileys
Haribo

BouleDeSuif · 14/03/2024 19:49

@Threewheeler1 it was lovely. Home made plum jam too. Life is too short and too hard to not have puddings.

BouleDeSuif · 14/03/2024 19:53

Oh, this is something I sometimes make for lunch. A large garlic and coriander naan with some fresh figs sliced on top, plenty of goats cheese or gorgonzola on top of the figs, grill or bake it till the cheese is melted and then add black pepper and runny honey.
It's one of your five a day and full of calcium innit.

Absolutely with the teeth marks, absolutely with the cream AND butter, absolutely with the salted butter

Make sure you put the butter first, cream second and jam top though......

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 14/03/2024 19:58

Shortbread. A friend bought me some from the Buckingham Palace shop, made to celebrate the coronation and in a nice fancy tin. OMG, no idea what in it but the stuff is like edible crack. Even better when used to scoop up icecream.

Take THAT, Van Tulleken, you irritating arse.

All this talk of tooth marks reminds me of the Danish word for it - Tandsmør (tooth butter)

I've also now had to hack two thick hunks from an organic loaf and toast them. Thick butter applied and cornish sea salt sprinkled atop. Yum.

Leftover roast chicken sandwich on granary with lashings of mayo
Vanilla custard slice
Hot chocolate made with real chocolate, real cream and tia Maria
Marmite on toast with loafs of butter
Hot apple crumble and cold vanilla ice cream

Wilkolampshade · 14/03/2024 20:00

@Molecule this is a LOVELY recipe, thank you. And thank your mum. Congrats to her for reaching such a great age.

Pesto on left over roast chicken sarnies 😍and plenty of crispy skin.

@maddiemookins16mum I'm afraid I would be hung, drawn and quartered by my family if I ever dared to deviate from granny’s gravy, but I imagine slow tasted garlic could be pleasant. Tbh though the virgin gravy has plenty of umami flavour - it really is utterly yummy.

Chicken flavour instant noodles, in between two slices of generously buttered thick white hovis bread 🤤

I haven’t made a sandwich with them but I do pile them on to buttered bread. Thought I was the only one to put the two together😁

I love a dish of just mashed potato and gravy. I could eat gyozas and tempura prawns by the bucket. Kid food I still love as an adult are fish fingers, Jaffa cakes and chocolate Swiss roll.

bluecomputerscreen · 14/03/2024 20:42

toastie made from a part baked baguette with lots of stilton & pickle.

whatdoidonowffs · 14/03/2024 20:43

Forgot toad in the hole
and it’s always jam first 😂😂

Judellie · 14/03/2024 20:51

I love a full English breakfast (except the bacon, not keen on that, but everything else). Especially if it's fried eggs rather than scrambled.
White Bread and butter, especiallythe crust of a loaf.
Chocolate (except for mint/nuts)
Chocolate Buttons especially.
Cherry Bakewells
Iced cake
Banana and raisin
Haddock and chips at the restaurant at the Fish Quay
Probably loads of other things I can't think of right now.

That sounds amazing, bloody delicious!
Heaven (or wherever I'm eventually headed...) can have me a few days early for the sake of a pudding like that 😍😃

I think we should have it written on a t-shirt! I'd wear it 😂

A perfectly cooked steak, covered in bearnaise sauce, served with thick triple cooked chips and garlicky buttery spinach. Dark chocolate mousse with raspberry coulis for pudding. Glass of good fizz to start, red wine with the steak and a pudding wine with the afters. Pure joy!

I'll have the same, except with peppercorn sauce and cream instead of butter in the spinach, so good

Snackpocket · 14/03/2024 21:37

Slow cooked meats like beef rib, brisket, lamb shanks. Particularly the former two smothered in bbq sauce with salty fries and coleslaw. Yum! 😋

Ooh yes. I love a slow cook. Lamb shanks are DD’s favourite.

Tomorrow I’m adapting Nigella’s bourbon and beer chilli recipe to cook an eight hour brisket. Served with baked potatoes and guacomole. Cold beer for the grown ups.
