Reoccurring uti in 8 year old

My daughter is 8 and since 9th feb she’s had 3 so in 6 weeks. First time was given 3 days antibiotics then 5 and now another 5. Culture shows they put her on right ones but it goes and comes back. I’m now monitoring her toilet habits for bowels incase she’s constipated. Anyone had anything similar with their girls ?

Bless her, my daughter has had a couple but not back to back like this.

Is she wiping from front to back after she’s been to the toilet?

Is she going when she feels the urge to wee, or holding it in because she’s scared it will hurt?

Does she drink plenty of fluids?

Any products in her bath/shower?

Have they thought of doing any urine bladder tests or bladder scans?

LeopardsRockingham · 14/03/2024 17:20

Not with a DD but DS with bladder issues and CKD

With that many back to back I would be pushing for bladder testing and blood work to check her kidneys are working properly.

It could be ahead is just not wiping properly, or it could be something more.

I believe the NICE guidelines are to send for testing after 3 utis in a child- though it may be for a younger child than 8.

If it were me I would definitely be asking the GP about further tests

I know that nobody wants to hear this. But just be mindful repeat UTI's in children can be an indicator of sexual abuse.

yeah she never goes anywhere but school and home not even to family. Shes with me 24/7 if not at school so I know it’s nothing related to this.

we have been prescribed some strong antiboitics to see if it’s shifts if not I’ll obv want more doing. She went swimming for 2 weeks solid and been told if she’s not drying herself properly it can cause it and that’s when it started when she was doing swimming.

she wasn’t drinking hardly anything either I’ve pushed school to have her water with her all time.

she was wiping front to back but went over the same spot over and over with same tissues. So tried to stop that and also think maybe constipated a bit as can go a week without pooping so they’ve said they could be a factor too!!

If it's trimethoprim she's been prescribed it won't clear it.

CherryBerry99 · 18/03/2024 21:56

Constipation can definitely contribute as stretching of the colon places increases pressure on the bladder which can prevent the bladder from emptying fully leading to bacteria buildup from pee remaining in the bladder. Have you discussed the bowel issues with the GP?

Junobug · 18/03/2024 22:04

I would push for bladder and kidney tests if it returns again. I have kidney reflux which caused constant utis as a child.

SavBlancTonight · 18/03/2024 22:16

This sounds more like a single infection that isn't clearing up.

Dd did have repeated UTIs but over months. In her case it was vulva vaginitis thay was causing general discomfort and a bit of a cascade effect from there. If they can't clear it or it returns, yes to additional tests.

It was trimethoprim but given her something this this time ceraflix or something

Hi, how are you doing with this? We have a similar issue with my 8 year old, who has had 6 or 7 infections back to back. We're waiting on an appointment with paediatrics but it's taking forever. Did you manage to clear them up and if so how?
