Songs that sound the same

Is it just me or does Dua Lipa’s song Training Season sounds like Love is the Drug by Roxy Music. Can anyone else hear that? Or is it just me? It made me wonder whether music will come to a point where nothing is completely original anymore. Hopefully not!

It's pretty much impossible to come up with an original melody, which is the aspect of those two songs that sound similar, and it's a fairly simple melody at that.

But there's much more to music than melody. There isn't really a limit to how different components of a song can be put together. For example, what combination of different melodies and chord progressions are used in a song, what instruments and synth sounds are used, time signatures (pop music has a tendency to sound similar because it almost always uses a 4/4 time signature), use of vocals, tempo, production. And those are really just the basics. There's no limit to what a person can do musically, but pop music does tend to repeat patterns more because it's specifically made for commercial consumption, so song writers and producers go with what's likely to sell.

Maybe go listen to some jazz? 😉

Caravan of Love by Isley Jasper Isley and Shake You Down by Gregory Abbot. Definitely not much difference between those two!

Oh my goodness it really is @TheTecknician when you think about the recent Ed Sheeran case, how did they get away with that? Or did they not?

Just googled and found out that there’s a new lawsuit against Ed Sheeran as Thinking Out Loud is similar to Let’s Get It On by Marvin Gaye, which I can totally see now I’ve listened to them both back to back. This must be the case with so many songs though.

I’m just talking to myself now! But I just thought of another one: Dear Future Husband by Meghan Trainor and Dance With Me Tonight by Olly Murs. They acknowledged the songs were similar and performed a great mash up when they were both judging on The Voice though so clearly no hard feelings.

Westlife - Queen of My Heart, and Wings - Mull of Kintyre

Paul Young - Love of the Common People, and Noah & The Whale - LIFEGOESON

Why? By Anthony Newley and In A Little Spanish Town. This one ended up in court but the plaintiff lost the case.

Not listened to them but could be the circle if 5ths theory - fly me to the moon and I will survive are iconic and different songs, but musically the same - just swap the words.
