People banging their car doors into your car...

ItsAStupidQuestion · 12/03/2024 20:43

Sitting in your car on a car park, someone parks next to you and opens their door, hitting the side of your car.

What do you actually do? I know some people will say that they would speak up but in reality, what do you do?

My old car? It would depend how much damage they had done, but I’d probably just tell them to be more careful.

My current car? I’d be after their insurance details. I can’t afford for it to get damaged in any way.

ZekeZeke · 12/03/2024 21:24

I would tell them you hit my car, take photos of both cars damage and contact the insurance company.
My car is new!

Marchintospring · 12/03/2024 21:27

Meh. What damage.
Why would you contact a bloody insurance company over something that T cut would get out. It’s why insurance is sky high.

iwafs · 12/03/2024 21:28

This happened to me. I was sitting in my car and a taxi pulled up next to me. The spaces were thin. I was parked properly in the space. And I was there first. The man driving the taxi opened his door deliberately forcefully and hard into my car. I was so shocked I jumped. He looked to be a really nasty bloke so I chose to say nothing. Awful, but I valued my safety.

tothelefttotheleft · 12/03/2024 21:37

I was sat park in my car and someone reversed into me. I got out and said youve just hit my car and they did not give a shit and just carried on with their day. No visible damage but they could have a least checked and apologised.

DrFoxtrot · 12/03/2024 21:45

I've had this happen to me and I said nothing after the first little tap. But after a second bang I opened my door and pointed out they were hitting my car - which was an old banger so I wasn't massively concerned, just thought it was rude!

The lady said 'it's windy', no 'sorry'! I just told her to hold onto her door better then 😆.

Priminister · 12/03/2024 21:53

This annoys me so much. It’s lazy and selfish.

I have successfully claimed repair costs from three people who thought it was ok to let their door slam into my car.

When it happens, get photos of both cars and speak to the owner of the other car if you were present.

I don’t know why so many MN ers think meh it’s all fine.

TesticularHeft · 12/03/2024 21:59

I fucking tell them and make a point at checking for damage. If they say sorry before I've had chance (and there's no damage) I say don't worry it happens. If I'm feeling particularly cunt ish I open my door into theirs harder.

If they look harder than me I say nothing 😂

TesticularHeft · 12/03/2024 22:01

And I have done each one of them apart from saying nothing because I have an issue with people damaging my stuff.

TheChosenTwo · 12/03/2024 22:02

Never happened to me when I’ve been in my car but I’d say something, take photos etc. Our cars cost a lot of money and we keep them nice so it’s important to us. My
old banger that was my first ever car had a lot of characterful dinks and bumps, I didn’t mind that 😂

GetWhatYouWant · 12/03/2024 22:07

I leap out and tell them loudly that they've just hit my car which usually surprises them as they hadn't realised anyone was in the car. Some say sorry, others just say nothing and walk off, one woman tried to say it hadn't happened even though all the passengers in my car had heard and felt it. Makes my blood boil, so bloody inconsiderate. I never ignore it though.

27Bumblebees · 12/03/2024 22:21

Probably an unpopular opinion, but if you have an expensive car, which costs a lot to fix up, then you need to make sure you have the money for it. Shit happens when you take your car out into the world, and I don't fancy paying out to fix up your latest shiny toy. Parking spaces are so narrow, new cars are so wide, take it up with your local council.

catscalledbeanz · 12/03/2024 22:22

I've been on both sides of this and have have never damaged anyone's car nor had mine damaged. Surely most people just gently lean the door whilst creeping out when there's not much space? With cars getting wider and spaces not it's rather inevitable in many busy city car parks.

Anecdotally I accidentally touched (and it was touched) a man's car once and he went ABSOLUTELY MENTAL. Thank god there were other people as he was screaming and actually hopping up and down with fists clenched. He kept spitting on my car and slapping the roof. He was adamant there was damage but there was nothing. Not a mark nor scratch. Numerous onlookers tried to reason with him that there was not a mark. Then he started screaming that regardless I had no right to touch his car with mine, and he was going to sue. Eventually a security guard from the shop came to my rescue (as man wouldn't calm down. I was crying and offering my insurance details despite not having done anything) and threatened to call the police- whether to report a "collision" or his behaviour I dont know as it was this prompt that finally got him back in his car and off. Some people are so ridiculously precious that they can't see reason I suppose.

DrFoxtrot · 12/03/2024 22:32

I don't think leaning a door gently on another car is acceptable really. I wrap my hand round the bit of the door that's going to touch the other car then I know how much room I've got and it protects both cars.

Sod off! I’ve got a big car with big doors and if I can manage to not hit other people’s cars you can bloody well be careful! If you don’t fancy a repair bill don’t fucking well hit my car!

Trainstrike · 12/03/2024 22:36

I don’t know why so many MN ers think meh it’s all fine.
Because it's a car. I don't give a shit if it has a few small scratches in the door. But then I'm not one of those idiots paying hundreds in PCP a month who'll be penalized for not returning their loaned car back in pristine condition.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/03/2024 22:54

I'd probably jump out and check the door for damage. I'm not overly bothered about a dent tbh but people do need to be careful - I feel sorry for the people on pcps who get penalised because of other peoples carelessness (they may be idiots but for many there's not much option).

BIossomtoes · 12/03/2024 23:01

I don’t know why so many MN ers think meh it’s all fine.

Because it’s only a lump of metal and any “damage” is just superficial.

Hit the nail on the head. If you can’t bear a few normal wear and tear scratches, get a cheaper car. It’s literally a moving machine that WILL be affected by slight scratches and imperfections at some point.

You couldn't just not hit other people's cars?!

SlipperyFish11 · 12/03/2024 23:07

Stare at them then realise I couldn't give a shit about my car and look away. Had it happen many a time. My car is a vessel from a to b I don't care how it looks. Saying that, it doesn't have any visible marks from these bangs that I have noticed anyway.

It’s bloody hard not to between narrow spaces and huge cars. Particularly if someone arrives after you and parks too close.

PickAChew · 12/03/2024 23:08

I'll confess that I did touch a car with the car door I opened, a few months back. Thankfully no damage done. I had eye surgery a few weeks later. My depth perception on that side hasn't fully returned but my awareness of how shit it is is now well and truly embedded and I get DH to open that door for me if I have to sit on that side and we're parked right next to someone.

ZekeZeke · 12/03/2024 23:18

Marchintospring · 12/03/2024 21:27

Meh. What damage.
Why would you contact a bloody insurance company over something that T cut would get out. It’s why insurance is sky high.

My car is brand new. If someone damaged it I would want it fixed by a dealer not some back yard cowboys. I would also be inconvenienced getting it fixed so would need a car replacement. So would contact my insurance Company.

Maybe if I was driving a heap of old shite I would feel different.

You just do the hand round the door edge thing described upthread if it's tight. Oddly enough people manage not to squish their own hand quite easily.
