People banging their car doors into your car...

Sitting in your car on a car park, someone parks next to you and opens their door, hitting the side of your car.

What do you actually do? I know some people will say that they would speak up but in reality, what do you do?

Not my car... but I was in a cafe in a rural area a few years ago and I saw a car pull in to a space next to another car. The passenger opened their door and hit the other car, they then did it again, and a third time, at which I said quite loudly in a shocked voice something like 'that's 3 times she's hit that car, once is a mistake, twice is careless but 3 times is taking the piss!' Turns out that the car that was hit belonged to the people on the next table and the bloke went out and used my EXACT words when speaking to the people in the other car.

They are too big for the spaces, the roads, housing parking availability, everything. Just have a smaller car. Even "small" cars aren't that small these days and have good crash protection ratings.

@enchantedsquirrelwood they aren't that small on the outside but they are inside. I need a bigger car. I have no control over how big they are making the car or how small they are making the spaces. I won't "just have a smaller car" to appease you. the size of my car is no one else's business and not a reason for someone to feel entitled enough to not take care around it. My car is massive but not an suv. It's longer and wider than SUVs. I always park in the bays.

This just makes me laugh.

I am going to have a massive car (whether I "need" one or not) and it's everyone else's obligation to take care of it.

Yeah right.

@enchantedsquirrelwood it's everyone else's obligation to not damage it unnecessarily, absolutely! You don't need to do anything different just be aware of your surroundings and don't cause any damage. Not a hardship is it. If people are that stupid/entitled etc then any size of car is at risk.

EndlesslyDistracted · 13/03/2024 16:42

The point is that it is harder to avoid accidentally damaging cars that are parked right up to the lines so huge cars are more likely to get damaged as they are always closer to the line. Nothing to do with the other driver being stupid or entitled. I try to avoid parking my (small) car next to any cars which are close to the lines but it is annoying to come back and find them next to you right up to the line or over it leaving only a very small gap.

I don’t know why so many MN ers think meh it’s all fine.

Because it’s only a lump of metal and any “damage” is just superficial.

I don't understand this viewpoint at all. To me, if you damage someone else's possession (car or otherwise), you do what is necessary to put it right. It's not acceptable to damage someone else's item and then just shrug your shoulders & effectively tell them to suck it up.

When my kids were still in car seats I used to keep little micro fibre cloths in the cubby in the doors, so when space was tight and I still needed to strap them in, I’d put the cloth between my door and the other car. Literally took seconds.

That's actually really cute and a great idea

Our current car is a Toyota Bz4x, leased via motability as we need good back seat space for the young adult it's leased on behalf of. I will admit that, externally, it's enormous (previous car was longer but less tall and slimmer - and a 12 year old rust bucket!) a Yaris parked near us, last week. That tiny car, only beaten in tininess by the aygo. Turns out they're not tiny anymore. Modern cars are huge, so there is no point in berating people for having a big car.

You with your 360° camera covered Tesla is like wearing designer white trainers and assuming they'll always be sparkly white, no one will tread on them, you will levitate over puddles and they will always be immaculate.
Don't drive it (or wear them) if you're that precious!

It's a car, not a pair of trainers. Your attitude towards other people is incredibly selfish.

My car cost just shy of 90k, consequently any damage to it is extraordinary expensive to fix. I pay insurance to cover the damage, however I will not tolerate people damaging it through carelessness or envy.

I trust that you drive it with due care and attention and never endanger other road users with it then?

£90K for a car. The mind boggles that people would waste that much money on a box on wheels to get from A to B (my car cost £11K for comparison).
