People banging their car doors into your car...

ItsAStupidQuestion · 12/03/2024 20:43

Sitting in your car on a car park, someone parks next to you and opens their door, hitting the side of your car.

What do you actually do? I know some people will say that they would speak up but in reality, what do you do?

It’s bloody hard not to between narrow spaces and huge cars. Particularly if someone arrives after you and parks too close.

You just do the hand round the door edge thing described upthread if it's tight. Oddly enough people manage not to squish their own hand quite easily.

That ^^
I always put my hand between the other car and mine so it doesn't touch, it's just common courtesy
My car isn't new but I still don't want people slamming their doors into it when I manage not to
Parking between 2 cars at work worth more than my house means I get out VERY carefully Grin

Nosquit · 12/03/2024 23:38

Honestly the replies here baffle me! Fair enough getting shirty if another car door bangs into yours with force but…those of you getting het up over a light tap? Get over yourselves!! Sometimes it just isn’t possible to get out of the car in a tight space without lightly tapping the other car. As for the hand thing - that extra cm of room can make all the difference in me being able to get out of my car safely and totally doing my hips in trying to squeeze out!!

If someone’s car door hit mine with force is say something. If someone’s car door just lightly tapped or rested on mine I’d smile apologetically and sympathise about the tight spaces - and yes even when my car is brand new!

Probably an unpopular opinion, but if you have an expensive car, which costs a lot to fix up, then you need to make sure you have the money for it. Shit happens when you take your car out into the world, and I don't fancy paying out to fix up your latest shiny toy. Parking spaces are so narrow, new cars are so wide, take it up with your local council.

Spot the door basher 🙄

Ozanj · 13/03/2024 00:06

I only really used to do it when I was really overweight. Now I’ve lost weight I don’t need to open the door as wide

Nah, I take usual care like anyone else. I just find it pretty cringey when grown adults get in a flap about their very expensive things they they choose to buy and put at risk of minor damage.

Hecate01 · 13/03/2024 04:11

It doesn't matter what car you have if someone hits your door with theirs and dents it then it will knock money off the value when you sell it.

If it's a gentle tap and you can see they have tried to get out without touching your car then it's different.

So much jealousy here for people with nice cars.

I'm intending to run my car into the ground. And not worrying about it means I've have had 7 years and counting of not being stressed about my car. I take reasonable care and I don't bash other people's cars, but I do feel much better for deciding not to worry about mine.

There's an easy way to avoid that....... be careful what you're doing? Confused

autumn1610 · 13/03/2024 04:22

was sat in my car eating lunch I just grabbed on the way home from a meeting, heard an almighty whack. I jumped out the car and said are you just going to walk off as she headed towards the supermarket. She looked at me like I was being stupid, and I said you know you’ve just hit my car, you don’t just walk away. Anyway we go and look at the damage and she had hit it that hard there was only not a dent, red paint on the car she had taken a chunk out the paint work, which was nicely stuck on her car door. I had had the car less than a week, she ended up paying me to repair it.

Have to agree with this.

I definitely don’t open my doors with force or ‘bash’ other cars, but a number of times I have opened my door against another car by accident as I have 2 small kids and I’ve struggled to get them out due to lack of space. I don’t have a giant car either. If it’s accident like that, i don’t expect to be shouted at.

Hecate01 · 13/03/2024 04:31

@Papillon23 just because you are deciding to run your car into the ground doesn't mean everyone else is.

Jealousy! 🤣

bluecomputerscreen · 13/03/2024 06:28

yabu

it's part and parcel of owning a car and driving it about.

if you want to keep your car pristine keep it in a locked garage.

I’ve got a nice car. At the end of the day it’s just a thing.

Yes let's blame the overweight people. Always room for a bit of fat-shaming 🙄🙄🙄

No, and that's why I said I don't bash other people's cars.

But choosing to own a car that you intend to sell, instead of buying a car, treating it well but holding onto it and therefore not stressing about it, is just that - a choice. And that will inevitably be more stressful for anyone who chooses to do it because you can't control the 99.99% of the population that isn't you.

People with "nice" cars who think others are jealous do make me laugh.

Having so much of your self-worth and identity tied up in how much you have managed to spend/ borrow on a piece of metal that gets you from A to B appears pretty sad to many people.

And then to assume they're jealous is even more funny.

But I am pretty sure you can't see that. Such is life 🤷🏻‍♀️

What do you think there is to be jealous about?

I work with animals and live rurally - if I tried to keep my car pristine my stress levels would be through the roof every single day.

I'm much happier driving my old beat up car - because the work I do and the roads I drive on means my car is never ever going to stay clean and unmarked, no matter how careful I am.

CactusClaire · 13/03/2024 07:16

Im using parent & child spaces a lot atm but if i ho on my own, ill park further away in the carpark to avoid other cars. Its rude and not on. Even my kids can get out without letting go of the door!

No idea why you quoted me when you’re agreeing with me. 🤷‍♀️

Why should I have to have the extra money to pay for damage caused by inconsiderate fuckpigs? What happened to being respectful and not damaging other people's things?

I have two cars. One banger for tip runs, dog transport etc and one brand spankers expensive luxury brand. Both of which I look after and would be mad if someone damaged because they were disrespectful.

It's an unpopular opinion because it's bullshit and reeks of entitlement. You want to damage my shit. You pay for it!

user1567879654445 · 13/03/2024 07:24

I dont know why they make the spaces so narrow! Cars have got so much wider. It just contributes to the unpleasantness of going into any shopping centre these days.

and that's fine because it's your car, your choice.

But that doesn't mean it's ok to treat other people's property in the same way when parking/getting in and out of yours beside theirs!

I had someone reverse into me once and they had the nerve to say 'that's what bumpers are for'. We're not at the dodgems, I said. There was only a small scratch so I let it go but it was an oldish car.
