Has anyone started from a point of being a few stone overweight and little upper body strength?

Just over a year ago I was comfortably lifting 10-12kg each hand (my bootcamp used dumbells and kettlebels), but then got an injury which saw me off for about a year. Just getting back into classes again now and want to start pole fitness.

Is this feasible? I'm on 1.25kg x2 plus bar now (Bodypump). I'd go once a week at the moment as there is only one beginner class. Would that be enough to improve and eventually join the level 2+ class one evening a week?
