New boiler cost - reasonable?

loopnoot · 12/03/2024 11:27

We've been quoted £7,000 by British Gas for a combi boiler with a Hive thermostat, removal of the old boiler, immersion tank and water tank in the loft, and then 6 new radiators.

Is this reasonable? It seems a lot of money, and they said we can do a 4 year finance plan with 0% interest, but it seems an awful lot.

I've never done anything like this before though so I don't know what the usual costs are.

Any insight would be appreciated, thank you!

Paid £3,400 for the same plus supply and fitting for two towel rail radiators in 2022. It was half what British Gas charged my neighbour

Omg, how can the price be so drastically different?! It's crazy money. I'm not sure if it's worth the investment. This isn't our forever home (or at least we don't plan it to be).

We don't have kids yet but in our ideal world we'd stay here for 10-ish years and then sell. With the way the UK is money-wise I don't know if we'll be in a position too though, especially with us wanting 2+ kids.

It's so hard to know, and we would have to do the monthly payments as we don't have tons of savings.

Get a couple more quotes. We found that BG price wasn't dissimilar to other companies plus we saved on the existing boiler cover we had with them as our price for that dropped due to the boiler being more modern.

We kept our feeder tanks and hot water cylinder so it was just a boiler change and think it was about £3500. We paid over 2 years interest free

When my boiler was replaced British Gas quote was almost twice that of a reputable local installer. I'd get another quote.

AliceMcK · 12/03/2024 11:44

We paid £4.5k combi boiler, new tank, take away old one, 7 radiators inc 2 coloum radiators in 2016. I’d expect it to be a lot more now.

ForgottenCoat · 12/03/2024 11:45

British Gas do their own warranty work so you will only get 5 years, not the usual 10.

They are also over priced and not know for their quality of work.

Reallybadidea · 12/03/2024 11:48

I would never, ever get a significant bit of work done without getting multiple quotes.

Also, do you really need/want to switch to a combi boiler with all the additional work that entails? Especially as you're going to need to borrow the money to do so.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 12/03/2024 11:49

It's a lot of work, I'd expect a hefty quote. That being said, always get multiple quotes.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 12/03/2024 11:51

BG are in our expereince are often expensive but you often have a lot of come back if any problems unlike some of the other smaller/alrger outfits

Look up the price of the boiler and associated items - then she how much they are charging for about and vat - more often than not a like for like boiler can be up and running in a few hours

Rosewood86 · 12/03/2024 11:52

Definitely get other quotes! I recently had a boiler replaced, quotes ranged from £2.5k to about £5k. All for the same job. Just make sure they are quoting for the same specs, eg type/size of boiler and length of guarantee.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 12/03/2024 11:53

Hmmm, well a year ago (April 23) I paid British Gas £4,000.00 for a new conventional boiler, new cylinder and tank, pipework and adding hot water to the boiler system (had previously been run by the Aga) for a system with 16 rads - no new rads needed though.
However, they had underestimated the cost of the job as the salesman clearly just wanted to get the signature, but they had to make it work obviously and needed to install a larger boiler than the one they had quoted for. Took them nine visits and to bring in a specialist troubleshooter but I got it all done for the price they quoted - cos that’s their schtick. Probably saved myself a thousand plus - which is why I bit their arm off at the quote. Would I recommend them and would I pay them £7.000.00? No, I would not.

SpringSprungALeak · 12/03/2024 11:58

BG are always expensive & generally rubbish.

I had mine done through an independent company 10 years ago.

I've since signed up with Worcester Bosch's maintenance/replacement plan & they have been brilliant. (replaced The heater matrix when it went & service was brilliant).

GasPanic · 12/03/2024 12:33

I had mine done with BG and was very pleased with the install, cost and service. I got two independents to quote and both came up with some pretty questionable suggestions. Independents IME are poorer at sticking to regulations and making sure all the correct stuff like registration for the install is done.

I would question why they think you need a combi boiler rather than a system boiler replacement and also why you need new radiators.

It's hard to tell whether your quote is good value because 6x fancypants radiators could cost a good few grand on their own. 6x basic ones probably less than £100 each.

dementedpixie · 12/03/2024 12:39

I'm happy with my BG install too and it was a similar price compared to other companies.

caringcarer · 12/03/2024 13:01

British Gas are always more expensive than anyone else. I found a small independent gas safe gas fitter who took away the old emersion heater, replaced 6 radiators and installed a new combi boiler and it cost £3600 at end of 2022. He was not VAT registered so I saved immediately. He did a great job and no problems whatsoever. I'd use him again. I'm in West Midlands.

BakedBeanAddict · 12/03/2024 13:25

Without the radiators but everything else, £3900 from warmzills for a Worcester boiler (higher than the cheapest option) two weeks ago

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 12/03/2024 13:32

Never go with British Gas, their prices are crazy. Our similar work was less than half that (we did have less radiators replaced, but some of the work was complicated by where things were.).

In our previous house where it was just a straight swap of an old combi for a new one BG quoted more than twice what we eventually paid.

That sounds about right to me. We had the same work done about 18 months ago with the boiler relocated and a few more radiators. It cost us £9k at mates’ rates.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/03/2024 13:49

British gas are expensive and their work is nothing special. Years ago I had them change a boiler and some radiators because I was new to home ownership and didn't know any better. I overpaid and that shitty Ideal boiler gave me endless trouble until it finally died and I got a local plumber to replace it with an excellent Vaillant one instead.

The annual servicing and couple of years boiler cover was little use because they wouldn't guarantee to come on a given date, or give a time, so I wasted days sitting at home (before WFH) only for them to say they weren't coming because they were too busy.

Basically I would not recommend them or use them again.

OhWifey · 12/03/2024 13:52

We've used Boxt and been very happy. Great customer service. Easy online quote so have a go at that and see if it comes out comparable.

DoubleOuch · 12/03/2024 13:57

That's a bit high, but not outrageous, I would say. There's a lot of labour with the radiator changes and taking out hot and cold tanks. Wouldn't have thought you'd get it for less than £5000 realistically, Of course always get three quotes, though.

BIossomtoes · 12/03/2024 13:58

Just the system flush is about £500.

OnTheTuftedWilton · 12/03/2024 14:07

Dec 2022 replacement of Combi boiler, no radiators just under £3000 using independent plumbing company. Vaillant boiler.
Definitely get more quotes from firms recommended to you by friends/neighbours/colleagues
Edit plus £150ish for the electrics as needed new thermostat

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 12/03/2024 15:49

@loopnoot
We needed a new boiler and completely new pipe work through the house because our system was so old it didn't meet current regulations. (2015)
British Gas price £9000
Local plumber £6200
No guesses required as to who we chose.

muddyford · 07/02/2025 16:57

New Glow-worm boiler and nothing else was £2000 with our pet plumber. It services a five bedroom, three bathroom, three reception room house.
