Bored of tea and coffee

Thrilling Thread of the Week

I WFH and am bored of tea and coffee. I like hot chocolate but really don’t need all the extra calories.

Any ideas?

Does that include herbal teas? There are such a range of options now.

StroppyTop · 12/03/2024 11:36

Hm, I should probably make an effort to get back into them. Don’t mind a chamomile or peppermint.

Love a chai but made in a saucepan with spices and milk and sugar. Haven’t found any chai tea bags that come close yet.

Mocha? Or flavoured coffee? I used to work for a Korean company and my colleagues LOVED them and got me hooked. They used to bring loads of sachets where you just add water.

This is what I’m currently drinking

Edit to say it may be high in calories but not as much as hot chocolate.

ViciousCurrentBun · 12/03/2024 11:55

Buy a little jar of mashed up ginger purée add about half a teaspoon and then hot water and a little honey, it’s a really lovely drink. I make ginger tea from scratch using fresh ginger as well.

ghostbusters · 12/03/2024 11:58

What about Earl Grey, assam, lapsang souchong type tea?

I quite like drinking diluting juice/squash made with boiling water. I have this. Ribena used to make a winter one. Orange squash is just as good hot.

I know what you mean OP. It gets to about this time and I'm tea/coffeed out for the day- plus the caffeine causes trouble sleeping.

Mid-afternoon I tend to have a cupasoup (not as bad on cals as you'd think, depending on flavour- I usually have chicken). Option to add a cracker or two if I'm getting peckish. If I need to warm up early evening, it's usually a hot ribena/vimto. Once you get past it reminding you of being ill, it's really nice! Only then will I resort to herbal tea- it's really not my favourite.

ETA- I keep meaning to try miso but forgetting to pick it up!

NCForQuestions · 12/03/2024 11:59

Upgrade your tea or coffee? I buy Yorkshire Tea in bulk 😁.

Find a better coffee, buy a filter or plunger type of device?

Hot squash is a nice alternative!

givemushypeasachance · 12/03/2024 12:00

There are so many different herbal teas and "fruit infusions" and things these days. Try some of those mixed boxes, where you get four or five different teas to try, or visit an Eastern European supermarket if you have them nearby - they've got lots of different sorts of herbal teas you don't find in Tesco and the like, and they're usually fairly cheap. Try scrolling down here for examples! https://www.bioshopromania.com/other-products/tea/#

See also: honey and lemon with hot water, hot vimto or other squashes, hot bovril, hot bouillon, horlicks!

Nothing wrong with a good old fashioned bovril. :D

Or a proper horlicks on a cold, rainy day.

sarahc336 · 12/03/2024 12:02

Hot water honey and lemon? Flavoured coffee? Earl grey?

Fraaahnces · 12/03/2024 12:06

Instead of the ginger puree, buy some fresh stem ginger and cut it into small lumps. Freeze them in a ziplock bag (separated so they don’t stick back together into one big lump preferably.) Then you can just whip out a lump or two, chuck it in your mug and pour boiling water over it. I prefer it unsweetened. Was scoffing some glacé ginger just before I read this. I have a change of seasons lurch cooking up so I might do the ginger tea thing right now.

You can also add ginger & lemon to soda or mineral water and it’s delicious in a G&T… This isn’t everyone’s thing but ginger is also delish with coke no sugar, but it must have lots of ice.
Now that I have stopped being a ginger pusher, how about buying yourself an instant low cal hot chocolate drink? I can’t vouch for them because I’m weird and dislike chocolate immensely. You can get chocolate and choc mint teas as well. Sounds utterly vile to me but my DDs love them.

SpringSprungALeak · 12/03/2024 12:06

Me too & anything herbal gives me a headache.

im vegetarian so bovril is out. I use marmite occasionally.

StuffLoriThangs · 12/03/2024 12:11

hot milk with honey or hot milk with a coffee syrup in.

I started doing water infusions too (can be hot or cold) things like raspberries, lemon, lime, cucumber, rosemary. It’s just a bit different.

SerendipityJane · 12/03/2024 12:11

Tea lattes ? (which is what our coffee machine is used for 90% of the time).

Early grey with foamed milk and a drizzle of salted caramel syrup. ("London fog" in Seattle")

If you swap the slated caramel for vanilla you get a Brumie fog 😀

I've been drinking Whole Earth coffee substitute, made from chicory, as my coffee habit was getting out of hand. By 3pm I'd be like an angry ferret.
I've been surprised as it's really rather tasty, even black. Sort of nutty and a little bit sweet. And I finally feel a bit smug having cut down on my addiction😏
I keep trying to find people to tell preach evangelically about it, but unsurprisingly nobody's remotely interested 😶so thank you for this thread OP, finally got it out of my system! 😁✌

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 12/03/2024 12:27

See it's already been suggested but hot squash is great, especially if you have a bit of a cold. Bonus points if it reminds you of hot ribena you had as a child (M&S do a blackcurrant cordial that still has real sugar in if that helps)

Isn't that just a (probably healthier) version of camp coffee?

I do love a camp coffee, but it's just chicory extract and sweeteners.

mibbelucieachwell · 12/03/2024 12:30

I second the chicory coffee.

Also dandelion coffee.

StroppyTop · 12/03/2024 13:54

Ooh, loads of good ideas, thank you all.

I’d forgotten about Ribena winter squash, that was delicious.

Will experiment with ginger concoctions and the London fog sounds nice too.

I’ll look out for the Whole Earth coffee substitute too, I like nutty things.

I’ve been on the decaff for years, but I still appreciate the hit of the good taste.

I wonder what I should use for a Derbyshire Drizzle?

Yep, very similar I think, maybe a little less sweet and it's powdered rather than liquid.
Come to think of it, I quite fancy some camp coffee now. Cold milk, bit of ice and could do with some sunshine to go with it!
I like the sound of dandelion coffee too.

PipsHip · 12/03/2024 14:20

Fresh mint tea? Zero calories 😁 Especially good on hot days, so refreshing.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 12/03/2024 14:23

I like chai too, micro milk or oat milk, add cinnamon or whatever and then pour into cup and add twinings rosehip tea bag to flavour. Really good.
