Talk to me about reading glasses.

I'm short- sighted. -1.75 and -2.25. I also have astigmatism.

After a period of holding books 12 inches away from me or in bright light, I have recently discovered the magic of reading glasses, whilst wearing contacts.

Other short sighted people seem able to see up close if they take their glasses off, but I just can't. Can you wear reading glasses from the supermarket if you're shortsighted? Feeling a bit cheated by my shit eyes, as I was under the impression that I'd have a few years of glasses-less close ups.

You need a trip to the optician.

If you are wearing your contacts you can definitely wear a pair of readers from the supermarket over the top.

If you want to go without contacts you would need readers from your optician as they would need different lenses and the astigmatism built in.

I've been doing that and it's been a revelation. Just wondered why I wasn't getting the miracle of sight that other short sighted people seem to get. It must be the astigmatism. I've been Ron to avoid varietals, as specsavers seem to have enough trouble with my regular prescription.

If you are myopic but the same prescription in each eye and no astigmatism then you can read without glasses if your prescription is within a certain range. You are right, the astigmatism is probably the barrier for you.

Maybe you just aren't short sighted enough? I'm -4.5 in 1 eye, -6.5 in the other, plus astigmatism that's getting worse as I get older (joy...) and I can do the 'read with no contact lenses' thing. If my lenses are in then I have to wear supermarket readers on top - otherwise I can't read a thing.
