Why do people lie?

I bumped into an old colleague this morning and it's been playing on my mind ever since as its so weird. 2 years ago I was in hospital with a serious illness (infection wise) and thankfully fully recovered now. I was off work for 3 and a half weeks, had given sick notes to work etc and left about a month after in part how they handled my illness. I mentioned that illness period during my chat today and my ex colleague looked shocked, said that wasn't what they were told (why they would be told anything is beyond me as we were nothing to do with one another) and they were told that I was so embarrassed about my poor performance, I didn't want to show up for work by the owners. WTAF?! The business doesn't pay sick pay so everyone always came in unless they were dying. I have no idea (bar the overall toxicity there) why anyone would make up such a lie? Why do people feel the need to lie about others?

I'm not really sure what I want from this thread, I'm still just so shocked 8 hours later I think!

You don't realise they lied because they treated you poorly?

Whyforartthou · 09/03/2024 21:16

How do you mean?

I'm not sure what's confusing or unclear about what I said.

Well either way, I still don't understand what you meant in order to reply to you properly 😁

I think that the PP is saying is that they wouldn’t have wanted to tell the truth because it made them look bad (if, as you say, they handled your illness badly), so the assumption would be that they lied to save face.

Ohhh I see! I was still with the business at the time though and went back after being ill? I don't understand why they would need to make things up - especially something so nasty when I was so ill - it would just be 'x is leaving' or 'x has another job' etc. It's such an unnecessarily horrible thing to do

That seems awful, was it definitely not just that your ex colleague picked it up wrong? I’d still be in shock too op, sounds terrible!

Whyforartthou · 09/03/2024 21:40

No, she's very nice and wouldn't make it up, you could tell in her delivery it was true. The place was toxic but usually in a covert way, to make up a lie like that and tell people that with no qualms is disgusting behaviour for supposedly professional people... They are be kind/wellness at work campaign pushers too so the irony isn't lost
