Pain after filling - is this normal?

I had a filling this afternoon which the dentist said was much bigger than she initially thought/ what showed on the x-ray. When she was doing the drilling, it wasn’t painful per se but it was uncomfortable - the tooth felt v sensitive. She said it may need root canal / a crown in the future.

Anyway tonight now the numbness has worn off, the tooth feels sore. It’s like a sort of throbbing pain. I’ve taken some ibuprofen and I’ve avoided eating on that side of mouth.

Is this normal?

To a point; you've had living tissue drilled into. Just like if you had any other operation you'd expect the area to feel sore after.

If that same throbbing pain persists you'll likely need root canal treatment. On an X- ray a carious lesion (decay) might look a certain size, but it's not until we drill into the tooth the true extent becomes clear. X-rays tend to under-represent the size of decay.

I've had this before. I'd give it a couple of days before you worry!

So it’s been 9 days and my tooth hasn’t been right all week. Now it’s really hurting - like throbbing. What does this mean? I’m going to call the dentist tomorrow

Sounds like an infection. Definitely dentist tomorrow.
