Help me find a double bed for my teenager!

Hello,

My DS is 5’11 and probably a bit of growing still to do. He needs a new bed as his single bed is falling apart. I have been looking for a smalll double/or double bed for his room but struggling to find something in budget -£500ish including mattress.

We both don’t like the grey fabric beds and I’m not keen on the leather style beds either. I think the ottoman beds would be handy for storage.

Ive been looking on the FB marketplace for a bed frame for a while but it’s mostly grey or pine. I would then need to pay to get it transported so probably wouldn’t work that much cheaper. I would like to buy him a new mattress anyway.

Has anyone got any suggestions? Dreams and Benson beds are out of our price range. I’ve seen a black fabric one on Dusk but DS isn’t keen on the high headboard and it’s going over budget too when I include the mattress.

Ikea? Absolutely tons of double beds + mattresses within your budget

I never thought of there and didn’t realise they had mattresses. Our nearest one is quite a distance away but they do delivery.

thanks!

IKEA Malm bed. You won’t get the Malm ottoman bed for £500 unfortunately, but you might get the one with drawers.

Argos have lots that would fit the bill. We recently got the Habitat Chile bed for our room and it's lovely, very sturdy, no squeaks or creaks. Got DD the Habitat Heavy Duty single bed which she loves too but I would find too low.

I got a spare bed from IKEA (pine, can’t remember the name) and a mattress from John Lewis. Whole lot came to about £500 I think.

yaboreme · 08/03/2024 18:46

I'll second Argos! We bought a double from the Habitat range.

IKEA do good cheap dark metal frames and good memory foam mattresses that together will easily come in under £500. Where in the country are you? I have family selling this exact thing atm in two places!

DragonFly98 · 08/03/2024 18:47

Definitely IKEA

DS (14) has an ikea malm bed with drawers for storage. He likes it a lot. The pretty standard ikea mattress he got with it is comfy too.

UpsideLeft · 08/03/2024 18:48

IKEA

Have you tried Next? We got a metal frame one from there and a mattress from Ikea for our teen. He says it's very comfy. Worth travelling to an Ikea to test them out, they roll up pretty compact, we got ours in the car to bring home.

My kids have this frame https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8046080?clickPR=plp:20:385
and this mattress

with a thick IKEA topper

cannot fault it.

Got Nectar points when they were delivered !

WorriedGiraffe12 · 08/03/2024 18:52

IKEA malm. It has 4 massive under bed drawers and they do mattresses too!

Deinonychus · 08/03/2024 18:54

We got our spare bed from sleep beds, it was the Karina we went for with orthopaedic sprung mattress, about £370 all in for a double and v comfy.

Whiskeypowers · 08/03/2024 18:54

my three kids all have silent night healthy growth divan beds and the doubles divan including mattress are just over £500 each. I have slept in them they are very comfortable
also second ikea

Bed Warehouse Direct have some really good priced beds. Got ours there about seven years ago now and it’s still perfect.

NotFastButFurious · 08/03/2024 19:02

Just be aware that ikea bed sizes are slightly different to standard uk ones so you need to buy a mattress from there as well. The malm is great but it’s quite wide as it has sides to the frame. If he’s going to be tall I would avoid ones with a foot end.

HungryBeagle · 08/03/2024 19:07

Agree with the IKEA Malm with the mattress listed above. 2 of my children have one. The drawers underneath are so handy.

Livedandlearned · 08/03/2024 19:11

My ds got his ottoman double bed from B&M and it's brilliant.

They also sell standard doubles now and have done for a while so just choose that size if that’s what you want! But IKEA mattress are good quality and great value so I’d also get one from there. Agree if he’s tall not to get a footbed though.

Tontomonty · 08/03/2024 19:56

Thanks so much everyone. I’m off to Google all these suggestions!

I wish they would make a longer length double for taller people! The bed will definitely have to be open ended to allow my DS for further growth.

🙂
