I agree with you, it shocks me the amount of permissions you give the app across your device, I think people are sleepwalking into giving away too much data. It says a lot that children young enough to cry at losing an app are on social media. Too young. As for the angry man in the article… deary me. Racist for being worried about a foreign government potentially having access, now or in the future, to hundreds of thousands of your citizens’ data? I wouldn’t trust close allies with that, never mind the CPC. This bill has an uphill battle if that is indeed a majority concern.

It should definitely be banned.

As for those who claim its racist, Facebook is banned in China.

Children should be nowhere near tiktok. Just this week an 11 year old boy in the UK has died through some sort of tiktok challenge. Another boy died from apparently swallowing magnets. The parents should be policing what kids are looking at, or better still ban smartphones altogether for under 18s

Yes, it’s easy to watch hundreds of videos in one week, just scroll, scroll, scroll. How can any parent oversee all that? I saw something really disturbing on YouTube of all places recently and I have filters on already so I can just look at pleasant nonsense on there. It can’t be good for children to be looking at themselves and their peers posed ‘best version’ so much either. Self-esteem issues nearly guaranteed. We know all this, it’s in the news so much, I don’t know why people would fight doing something about it. The free speech argument is such a red herring, we don’t argue for children having a right to sexual relationships, a right to drink alcohol, or any other rights an adult alone is mature enough to exercise/engage in. Even adults struggle with social media.
