Not sure what to do about bind boil / infection on face?

For the past few days I've had a lump under the skin on my temple next to my eye, at first I thought it was just a spot but there is no head and its grown to be about an inch in length and is about a half an inch across. I don't think it is a spot I think it is some kind of pocket of infection under the skin, the skin is a bit red, its also hot and quite tender to the touch. Its a noticeable bump but not huge yet.

I don't know what to do, I tried using magnesium sulphate on it but as there is no head their is no way for the infection to drain. I did make an appointment to see my GP tomorrow morning but I hate wasting their time I'm just worried about leaving it unseen over the weekend especially as it is on my face next to my eye.

Am I being un reasonable to see the GP about this tomorrow, I could cancel and see how it goes over the weekend?

Any other tips to get rid of it over night?

I'd be using as hot water as I could stand, cotton wool soaked in it and pressed on it. Then a damn hard squeeze!

I have done that but there is no head to squeeze anything from! Also I think with a boil on the face its a bad infection risk to squeeze although I'd be tempted if there was a head on the infection!

I mean, I wouldn't be able to leave it alone so if be stabbing it with a sanitizer needed etc etc

But yeh if you think it is like a pocket of infection then I'd say you should go to gp.

I had something similar on the back of my shoulder. I sent a photo to my surgery and was prescribed antibiotics. It went down and then oozed clear liquid for a week. It did leave a dent though which was not a problem on my back but obviously yours is in a more prominent place.

This is the sort of thing that pharmacists can advise you on so l think that this should be your first port of call.

Yeah I am a bit concerned about scaring but probably more concerned about the infection spreading to my eyes or brain if its something nasty! I have acne prone skin but never have had anything like this before.

I suppose I'll just go to the GP tomorrow and hopefully they won't think I'm a time waster!

I did see a pharmacist today but he said he could only prescribe antibiotics under certain circumstances (insect bit and infected nail bed). His advice was to leave it another day and see a GP the day after if it wasn't gone or worse but obviously the day after tomorrow is Saturday and the GP won't be available.

I would go to the GP. I don't think it's a good idea to let infections continue, especially that close to the eye.

photonbrol · 07/03/2024 22:13

@ShrubRose If it wasn't on my face I'd be less worried about it but yeah my eye feels a bit odd but it could just be the swelling or pain radiating from the infection. Worse they can do is send me away I suppose. Best to go just in case!

Sounds good. Get a good night's sleep and let the GP take care of it tomorrow. Hope it resolves very quickly.

BeretRaspberry · 07/03/2024 22:22

Given you’ve already seen the pharmacist, I’d keep your GP appointment. Especially with it being near your eye too.

I’ve had massive, blind lumps over the years but never hot or near the eye.

DrJoanAllenby · 07/03/2024 22:24

Very hot water in a bowl and lean over with a towel over your head and steam your face to open up pores that might help the infection come to the surface.

photonbrol · 07/03/2024 22:25

@ShrubRose Thanks, I hope so too!

@BeretRaspberry If it weren't Friday tomorrow I'd have left it another day but it probably best to go under the circumstances.

I will do that before I go to bed, thanks!

Do not squeeze it

Papillon23 · 07/03/2024 22:26

I'd just see a GP. No point messing about with something that close to your eye as you've already seen a pharmacist.

UpsideLeft · 07/03/2024 22:28

It does look infected because of that huge area around it which you don't get with a spot usually

Do not squeeze it

I literally can't as there isn't any head or opening, its totally under the skin but I saw some images online of people who squeezed what turned out to be a staph or MRSA infection and it wasn't good!

Yeah. That’s my thinking. Especially as you’ve managed to get the appointment already - you never know when you’ll get another these days!

photonbrol · 07/03/2024 22:31

@upside I have acne prone skin and have since my teens but I've never had a spot like this and I have had some big ones, this isn't a normal spot its definitely some kind of infection.

Bump.
OP, wondering if you went to the GP. Hope you are getting better.

photonbrol · 09/03/2024 17:11

Thanks, yeah I saw the GP and have antibiotics, he took one look at it and wrote the prescription, it that doesn't clear it up I have to go back. Thanks for checking 🤗
