I might have been speeding. Worried

A country road near me is limited to 50mph. Turns to 40mph about a mile down. I was turning onto the 50 bit of the road and a car going the other way flashed me twice.

A few hundred yards up the road there was a large van in a layby on my side that had the reflective stripes on the back, but definitely wasn’t a police van. I’m hoping it was this that he mistook for a police speed van.

About a mile down the road, I reached the point where it turns to 40. Glanced in my rear view mirror and there was another larger white van, tucked away though in another lay by so no idea if that was police or not !!

Speedo was reading around 45-48. I think it’s a few mph out.

Will I be okay? Feel so stupid, I never speed and have never had any points

Or perhaps it's a way to generate revenue

No fine is made if you take the speeding course.
The intention there is to educate not generate revenue.

I don't really know why you are freaking out. Of course you will 'be alright' even if you do get caught for speeding. You will either get points and a fine or a speed awareness course which costs about the same a the fine but avoids an increase in insurance premiums. You're not going to lose your job or anything. If you regularly speed a little and hold the belief that your speedo is a little bit out as an excuse I would suggest being a bit more careful in future. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime as the saying goes.

I got caught in similar circumstances last year but doing 33 in a 30. I had the choice of doing a speed awareness course or accepting three points on my license. The cost was the same, about £85 ish from memory. I did the course.

The options are:

  • it wasn’t a police van
  • it was and you were under the speed for action to be taken
  • It was and you’ll get points and a fine
  • it was and you’ll get offered a speed awareness course

None of them are worth worrying about.

But honestly, stop telling yourself “I never speed”. Because you were speeding, and the chance that it was the one and only time is nil.

Regarding speeding ticket. Think I may have been caught on camera. Van on grass verge. This was approximately 2 weeks ago. I am now in Spain for a month, no-one to check my mail. What happens if a letter is received whilst I am away so cannot respond to advise the driver or pay fine or accept speed awareness course so do not get points on my license. Worried they may take me to court in my absence.

Find the number/email address for that force’s speed camera ticket office and contact them for advice. I’ve done similar, I dropped them a mail and said I think I was speeding past a van but I’m in the middle of an address change and don’t want to miss the NIP. They replied telling me that there was no offence recorded against that registration.
