Anyone want to join me (night before) World Book Day Hell?

Same old every year. Last minute panic about crafting together some outfit to vaguely resemble a character in a book they once read.
“No child number one I cannot create a tortoise outfit from thin air so you can go as Esio Trot” meanwhile child 2 is in floods of tears because I won’t let her dye her hair bright pink so she can be some random character from Harry Potter.
I hate it! When does it stop?!!

This is what my dd asked to go as. Luckily with a couple of weeks notice.
Very grateful Ds just wants to wear his spiderman outfit.

And I get the sentiment behind it…really I do…promote reading etc etc very laudable…but I don’t see how dressing up as Elsa or another Disney princess is going to encourage reading (as opposed to watching more Disney films) <grumble>

Wow! Impressive! I’ve just found a rainbow onesie and a unicorn horn on a hairband that is going form the basis of child 1s outfit…just need to find a book with a unicorn character….

Yeah I’m a WBD scrooge so we do it backwards and they get to pick an outfit from the existing dressing up box and can then match it to a book. Highlights of the selection include cat, unicorn, dinosaur, duck, witch, astronaut and all the headline disney fairytale princesses so there’s plenty to choose from.

Ds who is 8 has informed me he has no intention of dressing up and will just take a book and go in uniform - this has saddened me so much!

I would be rejoicing!

dd is an oompaloompa. Given that literally everywhere was sold out of oompaloompa costumes I’m thinking she won’t be the only one.

ds is Percy Jackson. Again

pallyloo · 06/03/2024 21:19

My child's school is doing WBD for the first time but they have said either dress up or wear pyjamas/ cosy clothes so very pleased with this

That was like my son but we found some normal clothed characters he could say he was, just so he work his home clothes lol

Nsws2015 · 06/03/2024 21:20

My 3 year old is at playgroup tomorrow...he's recently potty trained so I'm not stressing him with trying to get a costume off when he needs to go to the toilet, and he isn't bothered by costumes, so I bought a fluffy gruffalo jumper from sainsburys cos he loves the gruffalo and will wear it again so win win! Although he has taken a liking to using my knitting needles (if he can get hold of one!) As a wand so I could have put him in a Harry potter cloak 🤣

tigerinthejungle · 06/03/2024 21:21

Just pyjamas or comfy clothes here and bring a book if you fancy it.

Goneback2school · 06/03/2024 21:21

8 year old dd basically sorted her own costume from her existing clothes and is currently having a trial run. The only thing I had to do was buy some pipe cleaners to trial the pippi longstockings plaits. 11 yo ds will probably grab his harry potter or percy Jackson book, put on a hoodie and jeans and call it good.

JaneIves · 06/03/2024 21:22

Last year of WBD for us, daughter going in fluffy pjs as she did last year. Has been the obligatory Harry Potter. I really liked the years we had to decorate a potato (Ladybird from what the ladybird heard) or a toilet/kitchen roll tube (stickman)

Violettaa · 06/03/2024 21:24

DD4 has a book of ballet stories, so is going in her ballet uniform.

As an aside, plots to all the ballets are horribly #problematic. When I read them with her I ended up spending a long time trying to explain consent in an appropriate way!

MagentaMushrooms · 06/03/2024 21:27

DS nursery have asked for children to go dressed up as a character and bring the corresponding book. As he has grey trousers and a grey jumper, I picked his Wonky Donkey book off the shelf and ordered donkey ears and tail along with an eye patch from amazon! Realised he probably hasn't ever read the book so that was his bedtime story tonight Grin

Iam4eels · 06/03/2024 21:29

The WBD theme this year is "Read Your Way" so my school has said to wear whatever you like (within reason) and bring your favourite book. So much easier.

Eggsley · 06/03/2024 21:30

We have settled on Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. White t-shirt, black shorts. Sorted!
DS1's school used to ask the children to come dressed for a bedtime story, so pjs, onesies, joggers and hoodies were all fine. Always thought that was a great idea as no pressure to have elaborate costumes.

@JennyLake it stops after primary school!

hushabybaby · 06/03/2024 21:32

My sons have been going as Alex rider for some years now ( basically means you can wear cool all black clothes)
I love my kids 🤣

NerrSnerr · 06/03/2024 21:34

I have an Oompa Loompa and Matilda.

All fine apart from the Oompa Loompa is worried about being able to do the costume up after having a wee and doesn't want to ask a friend or a teacher. I'm slightly concerned he'll try and hold a wee in so will have to ask the teacher to make sure he goes. Matilda is worried her straightened hair will go curly.

blutterfly · 06/03/2024 21:41

Black cat Halloween costume being recycled here (for a book we have with a black cat in it)

previously we have done an owl from the gruffalo (old nativity costume)

eldest is too tall for costumes now (end of primary) so is wearing a Harry Potter hoodie and taking in the book (non uniform permitted in juniors)

we usually cobble together a costume then match it to a book

Bubblebait · 06/03/2024 21:45

My Sons School aren't doing WBD this year!! I'm actually pretty sad about it and so is he, love dressing up in our House Grin

mnahmnah · 06/03/2024 21:47

I love the idea of it and some of the costumes people make. People with far more time and energy and creativity than me! Amazon purchase for us.

NerdyBird · 06/03/2024 21:47

DD sensibly (for once) picked a character we had a costume for already. We needed to get a basket, which was surprisingly expensive, and I've dyed her hair. Just glad she has picked something and stuck to it!

Soubriquet · 06/03/2024 21:48

I will never not be happy with my dc’s school this year. No costume required. In fact they are get to go to school in non uniform and then they are having a culture day where they will rotate around each classroom and learn about different cultures
