Anyone want to join me (night before) World Book Day Hell?

Same old every year. Last minute panic about crafting together some outfit to vaguely resemble a character in a book they once read.
“No child number one I cannot create a tortoise outfit from thin air so you can go as Esio Trot” meanwhile child 2 is in floods of tears because I won’t let her dye her hair bright pink so she can be some random character from Harry Potter.
I hate it! When does it stop?!!

DS once wanted to go as stickman, so I bought him brown leggings, a brown t shirt and made a head dress with sticks we collected on a country walk...I was THAT parent. He looked brilliant.

The school made him take the head dress off as it was a safety hazard apparently. After that he went in his normal clothes for WBD.

Sod that shit!

toomanyleggings · 06/03/2024 21:51

Dd has only tonight told me she doesn’t like her costume. A month after we first agreed it . I’ve got three to sort in the morning

SockQueen · 06/03/2024 21:57

DS1 is being Harry Potter again, recycling his costume from last year (and at least some of his Room on the Broom outfit from nursery!)

DS2 hates dressing up so is going as Charlie from Charlie and Lola - I've just put some iron on letters on a long sleeved t-shirt. He has the slightly messy blonde hair too so I think it'll be ok. The lettering is a bit wonky but who cares?!

Set a reminder for 2 weeks before this time next year. Future you will thank you

suafa · 06/03/2024 22:14

@solarised is a right. It can be fun making costumes when you have the time.

But For anyone looking for last minute ideas.

Any book about a dog or cat: add triangles to a headband and you have made ears, tights with socks stuffed in them makes a tail. Plain clothes. Give the child the book and tell them to miaow or bark!

indignatio · 06/03/2024 22:16

Late Primary. Arthur Dent in a dressing gown is an easy win.

ElleLeopine · 06/03/2024 22:18

When does it stop?

When they go to Secondary. Thank fuck!

throwawaytuesday · 06/03/2024 22:40

I have 4 years old twins, one absolutely hates dressing up but will agree to go in a superhero (Wonder Woman) costume - I’m sending in the Charlie & his amazing underpants book 😂

Other daughter wants to wear rapunzel dress which I’m fine with. We go to Florida in less than 2 weeks and honestly I can’t be arsed with it

the school did give us a “theme” for their outfits (a particular book) but there was a parent mutiny so that got scrapped 😂

Beacartoonheart · 06/03/2024 23:19

My eldest ds school choose a whole school book that every class focuses on this year its "the wild" so kids can wear green to represent the rainforest. Either uniform and one item eg socks or hair bow, green tshirt, full green outfit or costume as long as its green.
He's year 6 so is too cool now but I persuaded him to let me do it for one last time for him before he's off to high school cries again cries at every thought of him going to his school so we done this......

Youngest in a SEN provision and theyve said take part or dont basically whatever your child can do without them being upset. He's 4 its his first one as he was off from private nursery last couple he won't tolerate a costume so hopefully he wears this.....

Beacartoonheart · 06/03/2024 23:26

..... posted before adding photo. Hasn't turned out as planned and don't know if it was worth the pain of these hot glue gun burns but I tried.

Tiger stripe pyjamas- tiger who came to tea

We were toying with Christopher Robin, but too cold!

Labraradabrador · 06/03/2024 23:55

DC school doesn’t do costumes, which makes me a bit sad - I LOVE that shit and so do my kids, but completely understand that it’s a nightmare for many. Energy redirected to Easter bonnets - kids have drafted conceptual drawings, handed me a materials list, and have done a few proof of concept experiments.

come sports day mine will be begrudgingly shuffling into place, won’t have many lines in the school play, etc. they just really love craft and have the drive to do it 90% on their own. Totally understand that not everyone is into it, but for some kids it is an opportunity to showcase an interest.

PlantDoctor · 07/03/2024 00:00

DD goes to preschool. Last year she wore the very hungry caterpillar butterfly costume from Asda, but this year she wanted the caterpillar version! I've seen clever cardboard versions but not convinced they'd hold up to a day of preschool and I don't want to spend hours painting and making the thing, so I was boring and got one from Amazon!

onwardandupwards · 07/03/2024 00:06

My almost 4 year old is taking a bucket filled with dinosaurs to playschool and calling himself Harry

RoseBucket · 07/03/2024 00:10

My daughter is also panicking about what to wear, she is the teacher.

My sons have been going as Alex rider for some years now ( basically means you can wear cool all black clothes)
I love my kids 🤣

Mine too!

laughinglovingliving · 07/03/2024 00:24

Our school have made a stipulation of "recycle or reuse" or some nonsense. Anyway, I went to the party shop and grabbed a Peter Pan outfit for DS6 and a wolf for DS4. I've told them if anyone mentions recycling tell them they'll wear them again, honestly! I haven't got time to spend my life making stuff! X

It didn't for DD she got the fun of dressing up in year 7&8, thank god for covid as they stopped it after that. Can you imagine a school full of teenagers dressing up 🙈.

Bless her…I’m oddly comforted by the fact that teachers up and down the country are also mildly panicked about cobbling together a costume (that said…I don’t think I’ve seen any of the teachers in my kids’ schools dress up before!)

Thanks for making me depressed with the reminder that Easter bonnets are only a few short weeks away <wails>.
I don’t begrudge the kids dressing up to be fair…I just begrudge the pressure which inevitably lands on the parents…crafting was never a strong suit for me 😁

Oh we’ve been talking about it for weeks…my kids have a starling inability to make any decisions and have changed their minds about 25 times (trait inherited from DH!) hence the inevitable last minute panic and disappointment at lacking tortoise making materials on hand 😜

The WBD theme this year is "Read Your Way" so my school has said to wear whatever you like (within reason) and bring your favourite book. So much easier.

I’m raging our school has failed to get this memo!

My y8 daughter has to dress up today so don't assume it stops at secondary!

Noicant · 07/03/2024 07:04
