Anyone want to join me (night before) World Book Day Hell?

Same old every year. Last minute panic about crafting together some outfit to vaguely resemble a character in a book they once read.
“No child number one I cannot create a tortoise outfit from thin air so you can go as Esio Trot” meanwhile child 2 is in floods of tears because I won’t let her dye her hair bright pink so she can be some random character from Harry Potter.
I hate it! When does it stop?!!

Bless her…I’m oddly comforted by the fact that teachers up and down the country are also mildly panicked about cobbling together a costume (that said…I don’t think I’ve seen any of the teachers in my kids’ schools dress up before!)

I suspect that DD’s teacher is an enthusiastic dresser upper, she seems to have numerous wigs, it’s great the kids love it.

DD wants to go as Lottie Brooks which basically just means a high ponytail and red scrunchie. She also has a T shirt with Lottie Brooks’s face on so people will know who she’s meant to be!

@Mummyofthewildones

Totally missing the point of the thread but unicorns have cloven hooves and a lion's tail. Sorry I have an irrational hatred of unicorns depicted as horses with a horn.

Ugh I used to think it was cute when they were younger but now it's just a total pain in the arse.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/03/2024 08:00

We had it on Tuesday at the primary I work at.
Kid came as Bruce Bogtrotter with white t shirt with chocolate smeared all over it and cushion up the front to look like a big belly.
Cheap and funny.

Sadly it seems that Word Book day has morphed over the years from being about promoting reading and books to become World dress up in fancy costume day.

TM1979 · 07/03/2024 08:54

My ds10 has no interest in WBD. We are in Ireland and he is gone in dressed up as a GAA player which is his usual day to day attire anyway. He has a book to bring in..GAA legends 2019.

My youngest of three is in y5. Most y6's don't tend to bother so, as of this morning, I think I might have run the distance with wbd. Ds went as Bilbo Baggins and that was the easiest outfit we've ever done - wish I'd thought of it a decade ago.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 07/03/2024 09:18

When my DD1 was in foundation I made a real effort despite absolutely hating any sort of craft activity. She headed to school dressed as Matilda from The Pirates Next Door. Every other girl was a Disney princess in a polyester dress. Never again. Her best outfit was Tracy Beaker. She has long brown curls so just wore jeans and a stripy top. DD2 went as Elsa about 4 years running.

I always hated WBD. Ds2 always struggled (nd) and always had to go in jeans and a plain top. He point blank refused to have anything to do with costumes. I don't know why parents now put up with it, it doesn't promote reading and I think it's had its day. It's all about the dressing up and puts pressure on parents who are skint, very busy, struggling in some way. I'm sure there must be better ways of promoting reading. Kids who are going to read will do so anyway and kids who aren't interested, won't.

@ElleLeopine My son's secondary school are doing it for Y7, 8 and 9. Y9 ffs!!
Thankfully it was optional and so ds was absolutely going to wear his uniform. Unfortunately he's been off all week with a nasty bug, so I'm disappointed not to be dropping him off at school today to see how many, if any, kids turn up in fancy dress. I was intrigued and now I'll never know!

As someone who can't sew beyond a haphazard wonky line, I look forward to this if I have children 😬

I can remember some of mine, I was six dinner Sid (black leggings a tail attached to said leggings, black top and headband with ears on)

I think this may have appeared more than once as I can only recall photos of these 3!

My mum must have been particularly inspired one year - funny bones! Black leggings and top with felt bones either stuck or sewn on, and a cardboard mask cut in a skeleton shape. Think this may have been quite early on

A later one was a vet from animal ark - one of my dad's long sleeved work shirts, couple of small stuffed animals in the pocket, a name badge and toy stethoscope

Every year my children went in their wives Halloween costumes, they were always the witch from room on the broom.
No discussions that's how it was Grin
