Parents consultation coming up and our DC is in Y6. This will probably be the last consultation in primary. What do you ask the teacher at your parents consultation evening?

Usually the teacher has a list of things they want to say - achievements and targets for improvement. If I can get a word in I might ask about something we’ve noticed at home (e.g work they find hard) or maybe about friendships if there’s been something going on.

You can always ask if they are active or passive learner. Do they contribute in class activities or sit back and let other students contribute. If the teacher says they are more passive in their learning what steps does the teacher take to encourage the student to engage-especially if the child is naturally shy/quiet.
If the student doesn’t bring their books home you should be able to see their class work and/or assessment books to see the standard of work being produced. We are trying to tackle a massive slip from amazing work being produced in year 6 and then poor standards of handwriting/presentation attention to detail when they enter in Year 7 from some-not all-students. A parents evening shouldn’t give you any surprises about behaviour or homework as many schools are trying to open lines of communication when problems first arise to resolve and support with any issues.
I would ask ‘How I can support my child’s learning at home? ‘ Although reading logs are not used so much in secondary school your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes every day. Fiction or non fiction. Sports reports, local newspapers , anything but preferably not on a screen.
