Does anyone have a light phone? Plus questions on apples parental controls...

We're thinking of getting a light phone for DS for the end of yr6/start of new school. I've only seen US-based reviews online so interested if anyone using one in the UK, and what their opinion of it is. I'm particularly interested in the 'navigation' functionality and whether it includes train/bus times or is just a basic map.

DS is obviously strenuously arguing for an iphone - in his humble opinion an iphone would be cheaper, cooler and could be set up with parental controls to be almost as limited as a light phone but could have whatsapp and travel info (he'll be taking two short trains to school). So interested in how well apple's parental controls work. We're keen for no social media, no general internet access (he'll have access to internet on ipad and pc for homework), no group chats on whatsapp and in general quite limited time. How well do you find the controls work? Are they easy to hack? What rules work for you? Very nervous about the slippery slope once he's got one so how do you avoid that?

Have you seen the ‘smartphone free childhood’ campaign? You can join a local WhatsApp groups and discuss options.

My 12 year old Y7 has an iPhone. We have deleted Safari and she doesn’t have WhatsApp or any other social media.

There’s currently a glitch with the screen time on iPhones. I’ve got the restrictions set up but it makes no difference when they run out of time… they can continue to use it. If you Google it’s currently a common problem. Really disappointing as used to work well.
