Have you, or anyone you know, ever actually SEEN a ghost?

I mean actually, visually, witnessed something. I'm not talking about strange experiences, items moving/disappearing/reappearing etc.

I'm curious about this, the sort of visual experiences people have, what they're like, the type of 'person' they've seen.

I'm not interested in opinions on whether such things exist. And for clarity, I'm not entirely sure myself, however I do credit others' experiences and respect their beliefs.

I did have a visual experience of my own in my bedroom of my student flat, about 35 years ago. It was a weird old place. In a dim corner I saw a man with a blazer and hat standing in the corner. He looked annoyed. I ran out to get my flatmate but no one was there when we went back in. Felt a bit stupid.

What's your experience? 😊

When my dad died, my DD2 was 5. She used to chatter away to him all the time - and was bossy, which is entirely out of character for her even now. (She’s 17.) I asked who she was talking to, and she said “Grandad. It’s okay Mum. He has to be nice to me now because I’m the only one who can see him.” Initially I put it down to her processing his death, but she mentioned a couple of things about my childhood that I know for certain that she had never been told.

@ScaredSceptic Sadly, like you I was too scared to look at the lights properly, but naturally I've thought about it many times over the intervening years.

The best description I can give you is that it was a tall (person sized) narrow column of bright sparkling/twinkling lights. Small white lights. Is that kind of like what you saw?

Yes that sounds very much like what I saw!

At the time, I really wracked my brain trying to find a logical explanation for it. It's something I'll never forget (or understand).

Pozz · 07/03/2024 14:43

I don't know what I believe to be honest. But I do wonder why ghosts would walk through walls. If they're retracing past routes wouldn't they just glide along a corridor or whatever. Unless the building has changed or doors moved. Anyway just a thought.

Thanks for all your posts.

One of the things I find interesting is that there communicative ghosts, who are often recently deceased family members; and oblivious ghosts, who just seem to be going about their business as they did in life, like a replayed recording!

When you put it like that I’m really miffed that I didn’t have an encounter with my grandma or a Viking or something…

Instead I got “rapey” ghost presumably “going about his business as he did in daily life” 😮

Mopsybunny · 08/03/2024 00:40

Yes, totally agree with this. I think when people say ghosts they think 👻
it depends how spiritually open and sensitive you are. It’s usually a feeling you feel more than a picture, photo or visual experience. Change in temp, different noises. A “corner of you eye” experience”
I believe in presences (energy cannot be created or destroyed only transferred) it’s energy. Feeling and interpreting that.

Ps. Don’t do the ouija board.

Yes ,20 odd years ago, York castle museum.

I've got 4 kids, 3 used to stay at my Mums house fairly regularly. DC1 regularly saw a man in a hat in the top bedroom. DC2 never saw anything. DC3 (7 years on, staying without DC1 and having never had it mentioned) also saw the same man on several occasions, young enough to believe it was not a fabrication, and description was similar. Mum bought the house from my sister who had heard stuff (someone walking up the stairs to the top bedroom, same time 2.30am) but never saw anything. Before Mum moved in, we had two sets of tenants at different times, both contacted me about "the ghost" who walked up the stairs at 2.30am in the morning to the top room. House is not that old (1900s) House has been identified as one of the houses that lost sons in WW1. Never seen it myself as I won't stay there. Luckily my mum is not WOO, but she did come round one day to moan that someone had "thrown her ensuite towels all over the place" You do wonder......

We love York Castle museum! For various reasons we've not been able to have a holiday for a few years, but we used to go to York every year in the autumn and we always went there, it's great and the staff were so lovely, and happy to have a chat.

Can you tell us what you saw please? And was it on a regular visit, or a Ghost Watch type of thing?

Northernsouloldies · 08/03/2024 07:41

It was regular visit,I looked through the spy hole of the padded cell,a figure appeared with straggly hair ,cloth shirt with lace ties,I jumped backed, told my sister to look, she said nothing there.york castle museum and this visit was long before projected images like there is now.

We rented a lovely small new build house when we relocated. One morning I woke up and a person was sat on the end of the bed, they were wearing big glasses sort of 1980’s style. I had always felt I was being watched and one night on the sofa something hit under the seat that I was sat on, we had no pets. We were not there much longer as were buying a house.

My sister had a young child come in to a room when she was staying at a friends house. They said to her ‘I miss my Mummy’. She screamed, the owner runs in. She tells them and they reveal they see her often. A previous owners child had died in the house and they had left years ago.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 08/03/2024 09:05

I've seen things like this and on every ocassion I was unwell and probably had a temperature and was between sleep and wakefulness, lucid dreaming. I used to be terrified of these visual disturbances but I see now it's explainable.

Oh that’s made me cry.

I had a weird experience while doctors were trying to stabilise me enough for theatre after a bad accident, I was bleeding internally and not clotting so I am very lucky to have been airlifted and had a fantastic team who got me sorted and in theatre in time. I was chatting to my Nana who had died 3 years before, there was also white pigeons flying in the room so I don’t know if I was just hallucinating. I’d like to think of course though that my nana was there, the birds kind of make me think I was just delirious though!

CharSiu · 08/03/2024 14:12

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout my sister has had many experiences, she only talks about it within close family. She actually doesn’t like it at all.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 08/03/2024 14:54

Not a figure but a blue orb. The day my aunt was buried, I saw a blue orb that night in my bedroom zooming about. It definitely wasn't a car headlight and just zoomed all round my room. I wasn't scared, more curious. I'll always believe it was my lovely aunt Ella.

We had a ghost at a meeting once. Big round table affair with 25 people. Collegeue and I were doing the notes and both had a man we didn't know sat in-between 2 we did. He was in a suit and tie and didn't speak.
After the meeting we were trying to figure out who he was and called one of the guy we knew. He said there was no one in between him and the other guy we knew.
Ghost was our conclusion.

Imagine being such a workaholic that you won't even let death stop you!

Poor bastard stuck in a work meeting for all of eternity. Must have been really bad when alive.

My auntie swears blind she saw a ghost walk down the stairs at their old house.

And my dad, who never believed in ghosts, was walking past a church yard one day, when he saw this man come out of the church yard gate and start walking ahead of him. He was dressed kind of old fashioned, and carrying a scythe over his shoulder.
A noise behind dad made him turn, for less than a second, and when he looked back, the man with the scythe was gone. There was literally nowhere he could have gone in less than a second.

Boxing Night 2002, I was very heavily pregnant so DH was driving the car instead of me. We left his parents about 8.30pm, it was a beautiful clear cold starry night.

Now about 2 miles from their house, you come to a village and there is a crossroads. It’s quite a dangerous one and we always slow down for it.

Just as it came into view we both noticed a patch of mist to the right of the crossing hovering over the pavement. Seemed a bit odd but it’s cold, so maybe a bit of fog?

As we got closer the fog changed into the shape of a human and a visible leg ‘stepped’ into the road. We both slammed our feet on the floor to brake, I forgot I wasn’t driving!

It moved again into the road and my husband floored the car, ignoring the crossroads all together! I couldn’t turn round (way too large in a small car) but DH said when he looked in the rear view mirror it was back on the pavement just a hovering cloud again.

We’ve been through there hundreds of times since and never seen a thing. We still have no idea what it was.
