Fruit in the evening

Just been thinking. What time would you usually eat fruit in the evening to allow for digestion? Would you eat eg a plum later? So acidic/alkaline different times?

I would eat fruit at any time of day. The only thing I wouldn't have in the evenings is coffee.

ScottBakula · 05/03/2024 20:22

It's not something I even remotely think of , if I want a plum / apple / melon / orange or a multitude of berries I will eat them when I want.

RubyGemStone · 05/03/2024 20:45

What do you mean allow for digestion? I wouldn't have thought this was a separate task that would impact sleep. I like a piece of fruit whenever I want it.

Any time. Same with vegetables if I want a snack,

missnevermind · 05/03/2024 20:48

I opened this as I was eating an orange 😊

Violettaa · 05/03/2024 20:50

I’d eat it any time I fancied it, and the pH wouldn’t cross my mind.

SgtJuneAckland · 05/03/2024 20:51

I definitely don't know the PH's of different fruits
I would eat fruit when I wanted some

mydrivingisterrible · 05/03/2024 20:56

If I can't sleep I'll sometimes snack on some apple or pineapple then go back to sleep

This

I don't know the acid/alkali of food generally

I think mum does because she has IBS. Hopefully you are not having those issues OP.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/03/2024 21:03

I've never been convinced the pH of food matters too much versus the HCl you make in your stomach.

StarDolphins · 05/03/2024 21:08

I wouldn’t have banana or strawberries in the evening but other fruit I would.

Why is that please?

Not really no, it’s menopause related if anything.

i think they have a fair bit of sugar & bananas definitely give me energy! So don’t have them after 3pm!

takemeawayagain · 05/03/2024 21:26

Eat the fruit before a main meal, I think that's the sort of thing that's recommended isn't it? So the fruit won't be left fermenting while your innards (technical term) slowly digests the meat you've eaten.

Icystars · 05/03/2024 21:41

My children have a bowl of fruit before bed most nights. Didn’t realise it might not be a good thing? They have a few different fruits, usually grapes, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, orange and kiwi.

EmmaEmerald · 05/03/2024 21:47

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain Hope you're okay, it's annoying having to figure out this stuff.

@StarDolphins But strawberries are low GI, I'm pretty sure?

I've had insomnia since I was a teen and was told a banana before bed would help sleep. Nope!

I heard that about bananas helping sleep too and turkey slices! Never tried either. Grated nutmeg on warm milk does help apparently.

You get used to stomach issues in menopause. When I was 40 I worked with 2 older women who’d developed so they said digestive issues in menopause and kept warning me of that. I keep peppermint capsules on hand in case I need them.

I'm diabetic so only really eat berries. When
im being 'bad' I'll eat any fruit at any time.

shenandoahvalley · 05/03/2024 21:54

may I ask what digestive issues these are? I thought my poor sleep was just down to hot flashes and general menopausal insomnia. Maybe it’s the plate of pineapple, or two satsumas I eat before bed! I don’t feel any unwanted digestive effects - but perhaps the insomnia is down to this?!

Indeed they are! I’ve just been reading about all the fruits & oranges have more than strawberries! So strawberries at night are now allowed & oranges off the menu!
