Uber extra charges

All trains were cancelled this morning so I had to get an Uber from my home town to London. I was quoted £80 on the Uber app but have seen that almost £100 has been taken from my account by Uber. Are they allowed to take extra charges without notifying me. Surely they can't do this?

Did it go through ULEZ or the congestion zone?

Surge pricing?

Mumoftwo1312 · 04/03/2024 18:56

The initial estimate is always just an estimate because you might hit unexpected traffic etc.

Old metered taxis were the same, the meter goes up when you hit traffic

Sadly I experienced this recently. There was something in the small print about the price I booked for being subject to change e.g. if the journey was longer due to traffic. I'd given a large tip because of the traffic before I noticed so was doubly annoyed.

Check your receipt.

The £80 would have been an estimate, which wouldn’t have taken into account any changes to traffic or waiting time.

There used to be a hidden 20% tip that was only visible if you logged into your account on a PC. They'd charge you that 20% and then try and get you to tip another 20% after your journey.

I turned it off years ago and I'm not sure if it's still a thing.

Yeah the £80 is just an estimate, it’s not the guaranteed price due to traffic, if you’ve gone through certain zones etc

I’ve been an avid user of Uber for years, since they launched in the UK, and have never ever experienced this.

@TheHangryAzureBird

Trust me. It was definitely a thing. It never showed up as a tip and was just included in the price. It was extremely sneaky and IMHO extremely dishonest because it was only visible by logging into a browser and not via the app.

I've just logged into my account and those settings are no longer present, so it looks like they must have ditched them at some point.
