Taking Phenergan weekly

Hi! Is it okay to take Phenergan (promethazine hydrochloride) weekly? I only take two tablets a week so I assumed it’s fine, however when I look it up it says not to take it long term.

I take 1 tablet on a Monday night and 1 tablet on a Wednesday night. Has anyone else used it long term like this and has it been ok?

My DM takes it daily but it’s prescribed

Why are you taking it OP?

I was prescribed it for a bout of insomnia. It was during my final year at Uni so stress levels were high and I couldn't switch my brain off.

I started on 10mg nightly but was increased to 20mg after 2 weeks.

I was on it for about 3 months.

I struggle with insomnia which got worse in December due to my grandad passing away. I hardly slept at all for a few weeks and Phenergan was the only thing that saved me. I don’t want to be on medication every day though so I mostly manage now as I work from home most days. However I work from the office Tuesdays and Thursdays so I take a tablet the night before so that I can get some sleep before my office day and be well rested for it

I think that should be fine. The reason the instructions say not long term is that you can develop a tolerance to it if using it too often but I think 2 nights in a week would mean that won't happen

Sorry for your loss OP. Have you spoken to your GP or sought help for the insomnia?
I'd suggest other help in addition to getting medical support- bereavement cafe, yoga, counselling, hypnotherapy, walking group or other things to support your loss x

I have thought about counselling but I can’t afford it 😔 haven’t tried any of the others but I try to go for a long walk every day which is nice. My insomnia has improved since December thankfully but I dont feel confident not taking the Phenergan before office days yet

I took it for a few weeks a few years back when I was struggling with insomnia. I found it made it very difficult to get up in the morning and also I had very vivid alarming dreams. I haven’t taken it for at least two years.
