Digitising a vast collection of photo albums

My mum has been meticulous about putting photos in traditional albums since before my birth, complete with captions and dates, and these albums are a fabulous asset, and a family treasure. There are now nearly a hundred of them, and needless to say, they take up a lot of shelf space. Nobody has any intention of getting rid of them, at least not for the immediate future.

However, we are wondering about how we might digitise them, as a backup, and so that the collection could be preserved in electronic form, in case somebody in decades to come decides they are no longer worth keeping. My idea is to take a photo of each page with a good camera, which would preserve the way they were laid out. (We would not take each photo out and scan it, as this would take far too long, although we could do so with especially valuable ones.) They would then be stored on an external hard disc, with a copy being kept at each family member's house.

Has anybody done something like this, and does anyone have any practical suggestions? I know that there are businesses which might do this, but I think with the amount that we have, it might be very expensive to do the complete collection.
