DS1, 22yo has a cough. He's had it for a couple of weeks, I get regular updates on the phlegm he's producing - lots but clear.

At no point has he seemed ill in himself, he just has an annoying cough.

The last few days he's complaining that his chest hurts, sharp pains. I've said it will be muscle strain from all the coughing, he's being much more dramatic about it. His GF thinks he should see a doctor and I'm afraid I've been a bit don't be ridiculous.

If it goes on for a week or two, maybe, but surely he doesn't need a doctor now?

He is an adult so he should decide when to see a doctor. The doctor would soon tell him if there was no need to be there.

Of course he'll make the decision himself, you never discuss such things with adults? You wouldn't mention you were thinking of seeing a doctor to DH, for example?

I frequently get coughs and the doctor always says report in after three weeks to check it’s nothing serious. Earlier than that they talk about post-viral coughs (even if you’ve not noticed the virus that causes it).

The advice might have changed post-covid!

Anyone who’s worried should always check it out though even if it’s just a call to 111 to chat to a nurse on the phone.
