Just seen (@ 21.20) an Electoral Commission ad on YouTube reminding me to take photo ID to vote on 2nd May. Do they know something we don't?

Yes. There are police commissioners and council elections

First, I've heard of them (but we've just had local elections).

We only have police & crime commissioner election. We hardly ever have council elections: they are done all together once every five years, rather than having a proportion of councillors elected every couple of years, which seems to happen everywhere else.

Because it's only the PCC ballot, turnout will be close to zero. I make a point of always voting, but for the PCC I am obliged to spoil my paper because there are no legitimate candidates. The only names on the ballot are political party appointees who should have no influence over policing. If there were an independent candidate who wasn't a far-right lunatic I would vote for them, but I will not condone political parties having control of police forces.
