Help- dd obsessed with her hair!

Hi all,

I am hoping someone out there has gone through something similar and be able to offer some advice. Can’t find anything helpful online.

My 6 year old dd has been going through some struggles for the past few years. At the moment we’re struggling to get her out of the house without a major meltdown over her hair. She will only wear her hair in a ponytail but it has to be the exact height and then she’ll feel for any ‘bumps’, (9/10 she can feel something not right)if she does she starts to scream, drops to the floor and is really distressed. This then turns into clothes not ‘feeling right’ and it escalates. She’ll do this even if we are going somewhere she wants to go or is excited about, like the park. This is happening daily and I now dread having to leave the house!

she’ll cry and get distressed about her hair ‘having bumps’ on way into school and has started to ask the teachers to do it in school, but she doesn’t have the meltdown like at home.

She gets so fixated on it and it’s so hard to distract now she’s getting older. Any suggestions greatly appreciated as it’s a real struggle to go anywhere atm 😞

Is it because of how it looks or is it because it sits uncomfortably if it isn’t exactly right?

She doesn’t like the way it feels, I can’t see anything but she can ‘feel it’ if that makes sense @Withinthesewalls.

Mine went through a similar weird hair phase, it was such a relief when she got old enough to do her own hair. I got through the bumps thing with hairspray and a bristle brush.
