When did your babies sleep through the night?

My 1yo is still waking at 12am and between 4am-5am. Surely it should have stopped by now?

What can I do to encourage sleep through, I’m so fed up of broken sleep? We already do tea and bath, big bottle of milk before bed, blackout curtains etc. Has 2 naps/day. Nothing makes any difference!

The only way to get him back to sleep is a bottle of milk, how can I break this habit without hours of screaming?

9 months 7pm - 7am, I slept trained using controlled crying (not cry it out), you also need to make sure you get the day naps right with the timings and duration as if they're overtired or undertired that will aff et the night sleep. Also plenty of protein at night (but not red meat)

Allmarbleslost · 02/03/2024 10:23

DD1 was regularly doing 11pm to 5am by six weeks. DD2 woke at about 4am every day until she was about eight months. Neither of them slept past 5.30/6 until they were in secondary school.

suafa · 02/03/2024 10:37

My child didn't sleep through the night reliably until they were about.... 8 years old.

Both of my DD slept through at about 8 weeks. I formula fed.

ThreeRingCircus · 02/03/2024 11:20

About 18 months but with some periods where they would be unsettled and wake up. That would go on for a few weeks then back to sleeping through.

We did sleep train though. And swapped to just offering a sippy cup of water rather than milk in the night once they were past one and I knew they'd had enough during the day. We did the "pick up put down" sleep training method (although stopped picking them up and would just go and pat them a bit once they were past about 9 months). It worked well for us as I didn't want to leave them to cry it out.

7 and 4 now and they are both excellent sleepers and have been for years.

Whereshallwelivee · 02/03/2024 11:22

First two - from about 6 weeks.

third - still waiting at 3 and a half.

All exactly the same, all co slept from birth until 4 years old. Youngest is just different to the others.

NoOrdinaryMorning · 02/03/2024 11:28

Mine from the night she was born but getting her to sleep was a different story altogether (as was getting her to take naps). It may also be because of or associated with, her special needs.

Blaggingit123 · 02/03/2024 11:30

Mine were breast fed but I night weaned them at about 1 year by switching to bottle and reducing the amount of milk each night til it was just water over a few nights.

it didn’t make either of them sleep through the night unfortunately, but it did tell me that they weren’t waking out of hunger, and it stopped the waking routine (ie they no longer woke at a particular time each night) - but still generally cried once or twice during the night for quite a while!

I would stop the feeding at night as he doesn’t need it now but it’s no guarantee that he won’t wake, it’s normal to sleep through the night but it’s also very normal not to!!

How long is a piece of string?
My eldest was 2 years ( still BF).
Youngest was 6 months with occasional wake.( BF)

Sunnnybunny72 · 02/03/2024 12:00

Four and five months barring illness. No regressions.
Bottle fed, weetabix for supper, in their own rooms, not afraid to let them whinge and never ever brought into our bed.
This was 20 years ago and probably lots of luck involved too.

Both my DC slept 7am-7pm around 11 / 12 weeks.
Bar the occasional night of teething/illness that didn't change.
I had a loose daytime routine that started at 7am which might have helped?

MintTwirl · 02/03/2024 12:30

Reliably, 6 weeks, 3 years and about 9 months. All parented the same way.

Andnowshesatoddler · 02/03/2024 12:35

Before the end of my husband's mat leave so under a month she was one feed a night awake about 4pm about six weeks we started getting about 12 hour sleep throughs.
4 month regression was a bit harder and her naps have been atrocious until she was about a year now it's one nap in her crib about two hours.

mindutopia · 02/03/2024 12:35

I honestly don't remember, but definitely not by 1. From around 2-3 though, if they woke, they just brought themselves in to me and crashed out in bed next to me, so I didn't have to get up anymore and I barely noticed their arrival, so it meant we got a decent amount of sleep. My 6 year old still sometimes wakes during the night, maybe once a week, but again, I barely notice his arrival now.

boysmuminherts · 02/03/2024 12:37

Before 3 months but probably down to luck...or magic mum milk? Who knows. Id say if your other 2 slept fine its just down to luck and theyll get there eventually.

Muddywalks34 · 02/03/2024 17:26

DD1 was around 2 when she started sleeping through consistently but was an early waker until she was 4, always up by 5am

DD2 was sleeping through by 8 weeks

Tulipsandpansies123 · 02/03/2024 19:30

DC1 2/3 mths
DC2 1 year
DC3 2/3 mths with a dream feed at 1030ish

user1471538283 · 02/03/2024 19:33

My DS was 3 years old. I don't think it was a coincidence that as soon as he was out of nappies he started to sleep through. He never napped. He slept so little even as a baby.

It's so hard. I thought at times I was going mad.

Parker231 · 02/03/2024 19:35

Occasionally from about eight weeks and reliably at five months when we sleep trained. DT’s - formula fed. Into separate bedrooms from six months - they disturbed each other and us.

Frosty1000 · 02/03/2024 19:40

About 5 years old 😴😴😴

wishuponastar1988 · 02/03/2024 19:43

My 18 month old still wakes in the night. She was having milk until recently but I started to gradually water it down til it was just water and now she might have a sip in the night but that's it. She does still wake crying in the night but does go back to sleep without a fuss

SneakySnakeEx · 02/03/2024 19:44

Eldest 9pm until 6am, bottle change and slept till 9am from about 4 weeks
. 2nd similar times and age.
3rd settled 11pm but similar times to wake. Was around 6 weeks

4th well that's a whole other story i was truly spoilt with the others! 4th still wakes regularly at pre school age. But does go to bed 7 till 7 30am. But wakes 2 to 8 times a night.

Naptrappedmummy · 02/03/2024 19:45

My oldest slept through from about 7 months.
My youngest is about to turn 1 and usually sleeps 7-6, waking up once in that time or sometimes twice. Usually at around 3am.

Desperado40 · 02/03/2024 19:46

Mine two were really bad sleepers but is started getting better at 2....
