Do you play a team sport? I'd like to start something new.

I've decided I'd like to play a team sport, just for fun.

The problem is I'm not especially good at sport. I'm not very fast or good at throwing or catching. I'm fit enough though - I cheerfully run 5k in under 30 mins a couple of times a week.

I thought softball might be a good fit - but can't find a social league near me. I don't fancy netball or hockey. Definitely not tennis. I hate tennis. Maybe football? Any other ideas?

Softball is good. Near me they have beach volleyball and I think I might try actual volleyball.

I don't want to rain on your parade but, other than for the few moments when you're the one in bat (or whatever they call it in softball), isn't softball mainly going to be about throwing or catching?
A bit off the wall but, if you're fast, how about orienteering? We ended up going for a walk where there was an event on recently and there were a real mix of people involved.

But I'm not fast. What I meant was, I'd like to play a sport, and I'm not very fast, or good at throwing or catching. I would like to play a sport for the fun, fitness, interest, and social aspects of it DESPITE being neither particularly fast nor good at sports.

Is that the one where you double-punch a ball in the air, wearing a bikini?

Oh that's an idea!

Depending which area of the country you are what about 'flat or crown green bowling'.
You don't have to catch or be fast.

Rowing is a good shout, and don't rule out kayaking (individual but you go out in groups so it's very sociable) or sailing.

The friendliest team sport I've ever come across by quite a margin is Ultimate Frisbee. Yes you need to throw and catch, but it's a different shaped object that behaves differently in the air to a ball and has different techniques for throwing. Might be worth a couple of taster sessions?

Ah! I see! In that case, can you Google for social teams in your area, put a shout out on FB or go to a local sports centre or community centre and see if they have any flyers up? I think that, rather than focussing on a sport, you might want to try a few and see which group you like the most?
I tried one activity in the area where everyone was really friendly and clearly having a good time but were 30 years older than me. I was desperately trying to create some me time having just gone back to work after my second maternity leave whilst they were looking more at retirement. I know this sounds ageist and I was intentionally looking for a group who weren't just talking about childcare & potty training but it is never as fun if you're the odd one out. And I got really jealous as most of them had either retired or were working part time so were planning all of these mid week days out as well as having fun at weekends

That’s the beach one yes. The normal
one is similar. I’m pretty uncoordinated with balls and can manage volleyball.

I play netball. Love it. And also made lots of friends. There's lots of back to netball clubs.
