Evening restless legs

No problems during the day but as soon as I sit on sofa in the evening my legs feel awful; presume it's 'restless legs' as that's the best description of how they feel! I'm nearly 50, on HRT, use Mg spray sometimes which doesn't seem to make a difference, take Vit D when I remember. Am overweight but exercise regularly; dog walking, gym for cardio and weights 4-5x week.
I can't sit still in the evenings and end up going to bed as it's driving me mad (ok when lying down) Any suggestions please?

My mother in law had it for years. She did drink tonic water for the quinine and that helped a little.
Sorry I don't have better advice.

Bitter lemon too.

Stand on a cold floor.
Magnesium spray.
Muscle relaxant crystals for bath.

For me it’s directly linked to low iron levels. I take Spatone (first thing in the morning with a tiny bit of orange juice to help absorption) and it really helps.

I get this too! I find focusing on something ( knitting or cross stitch) stops it as long as I’m doing the activity. I’m known for not being able to sit through a film at night.

Massive cosy blanket or throw round the legs while sitting on sofa. Wrap around in a cocoon, hot water bottle on knees optional.

Runninghappy · 01/03/2024 21:54

Magnesium spray is the only thing that helps me (sometimes). I can’t stand anything over my legs as they still need to move and then they can’t.

Ugh me too, so awful! Sometimes I go and stand outside on the cold step in bare feet. Not sure if that makes a difference really, or if it is just walking around.

EspressoMacchiato · 01/03/2024 22:02

The type of magnesium is important as there are different types.

You want magnesium malate for restless legs.

I get restless legs when I’m anaemic -
maybe worth taking some iron?

Houseplanter · 01/03/2024 22:04

The only thing that has helped me is a weighted blanket.

Or no wine. I prefer the blanket option

Lund · 01/03/2024 22:04

Mine are a lot better since I was diagnosed with anaemia and started taking iron tablets.

wagnbobble · 01/03/2024 22:05

I slather my legs in deep heat - the “ pain” of it seems to help

newusern99 · 01/03/2024 22:07

Leg stretches help me. Particularly quad stretches.
potassium can help too.

Mumof1andacat · 01/03/2024 22:13

I have a relative suffering with restless legs. They have found cutting back on caffeine has helped.

Thanks for the replies.
I've been vegetarian for the last couple of years and despite a balanced diet I wondered about low iron, have started taking floradix tablets. Will have a few G+Ts and see how that helps 😁

Can i ask what it feels like i mean is it an urge to move your legs when you sit still or lay in bed.
But when walking its fine.
As soon as you sit or lay you have to keep moving your legs or wagging your foot like you cant sit still.

MrsP80 · 20/03/2024 23:21

The only thing that always works with my restless legs is orgasm 🙈

OopNorfDahnSarf · 20/03/2024 23:55

Magnesium tablets and going to bed early when the twitches are really bad

JPGR · 20/03/2024 23:58

I get it in bed. I find flight socks help so wondered if it was bad circulation.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 21/03/2024 06:29

I found magnesium spray didn't work but cream did. In fact I made my own because I couldn't swallow the giant tablets and ground it up into a powder, then put into a body cream. Instant results. I've had restless legs for years every evening and this has worked for me.
