GP worried me - 12 year old - foot growth

Hi all,

My DD is 12 and about a year ago, she complained about a lump on the top of her foot. I felt it and it was like one of those tendon/nodules that you get when there has been trauma to the foot. It was fairly small and she stopped talking about it, so I assumed it went away.

Fast forward to this week and she told me her foot was hurting again and that the lump had never gone away, it just stopped hurting. She was playing with her brother a few weeks ago and he accidentally stepped on her foot, causing the pain again. I felt it and it's hardened from last year, but doesn't seem to be any bigger.

Took her to the GP, who wanted an xray straight away, but we have to wait until next week as it's not an emergency. He kept saying 'just in case it's what we think it may be, I want to get her tested.' My DD was in the room, so clearly he didn't want to tell me what he thought it could also be. My mind was racing, as I assumed he meant cancer, but I didn't want to push things because my DD was already worried about it.

Have any of your kids had the same sort of thing? I now have to wait until next week to book an xray and follow up with other tests, but I'm in shock.

I'm a worrier, so this isn't going to be a nice weekend. :(

Do you have the nhs app? The consultation should be written up on there. It may give some more clues until you know more?

I can understand that you're worried but no-one else knows exactly what was said , the tone , the Dr Thinking Out Loud

From the symptoms and what you describe I'd guess the GP wants to rule out fracture (maybe a badly healed metatarsal poking up a bit , or a bone sequestra and showing as a lump)
A foreign object from trauma that has got under the skin and it creates a fibrous capsual . .
Ganglion ( a fibrous lump in a tendon - which from your description could be )
A cyst
XRAY will show osteomyelitis (infection in bone )

Rule these out (or confirm) and go from there .

And yes I know its a worry when its your child .
Good luck .

Most foot and hand bumps/lumps are absolutely nothing to worry about .

UpUpUpU - that's a really good idea! I went on the app, but it just gives all my data and none of hers. x

70isaLimitNotaTarget - thank you! I hadn't thought of those other reasons, so that's put my mind at rest. x

FoodieToo - thank you x
