Any era or civilisation, any social class, what would it be?

I’m torn between being aristocratic in Regency England because everything was obviously just like a Jane Austen novel or maybe the roaring twenties, even though I’m not the biggest fan of jazz I wouldn’t have minded the rising hemlines and risqué nightclubs.

I asked my husband and he genuinely started muttering something about Romans, which is hilarious considering he’s an almost 50 year old with no social media so he wouldn’t have seen or heard of the Roman Empire thing.

Or London aristocracy in the 20's when the tide was turning, people having less service and there was more cross over in social class.

Christ, that would be traumatic. Even if just as an observer.

Why would you want to see all that death and terror and suffering?

It is on the fringes of human experience, almost like going to the Moon. I used to have vivid dreams about the Western Front as a child, didn`t really understand it but felt I had been there during WW1.

Dinosaurs, hands down. Also 2005, I miss it

Agreed, but I’d swap 2005 for 1989.

@APurpleSquirrel

I agree with your post too...

I’d choose the 60s.

Same

This time travel things makes me laugh. Everyone seems to think they will travel back in time and end up being part of the rich/upper class living it large.

In reality we'd end up in a bog, wearing rags, be freezing cold & impoverished, relentlessly exploited, working 24/7 in some horrible role, eating dreadful food etc. Scrambling to survive.

cerisepanther73 · 02/03/2024 01:03

Notradommas era

I would have liked to have meet famous Female artist of all time Fredha khaloo

What inspired her to create the kinds of works she did at that time etc?

That's why a lot of people are saying "bystander". Fly on the wall maybe. Also if you can choose your time why not your status? You don't have to go back as your ancestors or who you are now then!

I definitely, definitely don't want to go to the future.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 02/03/2024 01:20

The 80s when I was a kid and all 4 of my grandparents were still here.

LadyWiddiothethird · 02/03/2024 01:22

The 1960’s.Lived in London then,it was a fantastic time to live through those years.

Believe me, it wasn't that great.

Maybe not for you - I enjoyed it and would go back like a shot.

That is why I said “any social class” I am fully aware that if I travelled back to the 1700’s my life would be service and drudgery.

Yes this is another one that I wouldn’t mind briefly visiting, just so I could go out dancing! Grin

I’d like a week in Dicken’s London.
Wouldn't permanently want any era where there are no antibiotics or anaesthetic.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 02/03/2024 07:18

Am I getting a new life, or just observing?

Dinosaurs and ancient Egypt. If I'm getting a new life I'd like to be wealthy in ancient Egypt. For dinosaurs I'd like a look at the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous, so i need to be able to time travel a few times. Wouldn't mind also looking at the later times either - the time of mammoths and smilodon.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 02/03/2024 07:19

Also maybe the Gatsby era - if I'm rich, of course.

FixTheBone · 02/03/2024 07:32

With detailed analysis of all the important things that have happened in the last 15 years.

Imagine preventing brexit, knowing the best way to come through the financial crash, and Covid. What a world it could be...

DaveWatts · 02/03/2024 07:36

I wouldn't want to live in the past - any era! - but I would love to visit:
-London before the Great Fire
-medieval Winchester
-5th century BC Athens
-Jurassic period
-Stonehenge when it was still in use

BouleDeSuif · 02/03/2024 07:55

@Latenightreader what's the mystery of your great grandfather? I'm intrigued!

LaMariposa · 02/03/2024 08:04

I’d like to to visit South America pre the Spanish, with an understanding of the language and decent place on the social scale if I’m not an invisible bystander.
I’d also like to visit China during the Han dynasty.
Oh, and India during the Gupta Empire.

and I’d like to go to the construction of Gobekli Tepe, and the Pyramids, and the Sphinx, and Stonehenge, etc

Basically a world tour of all the previous empires and monuments

Readerforlife · 02/03/2024 08:17

I would really like to experience an era where there was more textile production in the home and lots of variety in seasonal tasks-so pre-1800s mostly anywhere! But I may have watched the Farm shows with Ruth Goodman a few too many times😂

Prunesaregreat · 02/03/2024 08:21

I'd live my 80/90s childhood and teenage years again. Especially the Christmas's.

Wannabie · 02/03/2024 08:25

mid- late 1970’s London to experience development of the punk era, going through to early 80’s, with enough money to travel around the country for concerts.

wondabar · 02/03/2024 08:36

I'd love to have lived in Paris during the Belle Epoque (between France Prussian and First World War) where there was huge optimism, and it was a wonderful time for fashion, art and music.
