AWFUL smell- dead mice?

Dear all, dd’s room has had the most awful smell in it for about four weeks now and it seems to be getting worse. DH thinks it could be a dead mouse or rat but it’s on the first floor and there’s no smell in the room below or above…. If it is that, does anyone have any experience of this or tips to get rid of it? I feel if you’ve had it in your home you’ll know exactly the smell!!!

In my experience dead mice stink!! They smell a bit like nappies I think so if it smells like that it could be one.

My cat likes to bring them in alive, let them go and then they die usually under the sofa!

That’s it but a really rotten nappy!!! Any tips to get rid of the smell?? It’s been weeks!

My cat brings mice in and lets them go, I had to take a kitchen base unit of to get it out! The only way to get ride of smell
Is to find it and dispose of it I'm afraid

Leela2 · 01/03/2024 19:38

How old is DD? Could it be forgotten packed lunch?

petitdonkey · 01/03/2024 20:42

No, she’s away at uni so the room is empty! Since @Pickingmyselfup compared it to nappies, that’s all I can smell!! (It’s been a long time since I had nappies in the house!!)

Do you have floor boards. I once had a rat die under floor boards. It was the worst smell ever. Worse still I'd been on my hand and knees sniffing the carpet trying to work out where the smell was. I located area and took carpet and boards up. I retched, it was horrific but I got rid of it. There is a product that neutralises dead rodent smells. I bought it from Amazon (possibly) and sprayed the area, after cleaning with bleach and shampooing carpet. Gross 🤮

modgepodge · 01/03/2024 20:55

It does sound like a dead animal. My cat also brings in live mice which die and smell weeks later. The smell is usually pretty localised; certainly just in one room, usually strongest in a particular part of the room. Wouldn’t expect to smell it on another floor.

the good news is once it’s removed the smell mostly disappears straight away, then completely with a bit of cleaning of the carpet underneath.

The dead mouse smell goes after a few days as they’re quite small and dry out fairly quickly. Might be something a bit bigger unfortunately

petitdonkey · 01/03/2024 21:23

No floor boards! I can only surmise that it’s in the wall?! I’ll look on Amazon for a neutraliser!

Sounds more like a dead rat if it's been weeks.... we've had this problem recently and it's been horrendous because we can't access the floor where we need to remove it. Smell took about 6 weeks to go and then we had an infestation of HUGE flies. It was so grim. Thought it was passed but now the smell is coming back. Not sure if it's another one 😭😭😭

Langsdestiny · 01/03/2024 22:04

Exactly the same as Calishire. We called pest control about flies, nothing they could do and warned us there would be phase 2 of flies when more eggs hatched. They were slot on. Grim.

Fireyflies · 01/03/2024 22:08

Is there a chimney breast? I've known that happen when a bird has got stuck down the chimney. Not much you can do about it sadly, except air the room and wait for it to pass.

I'd let the rat have the house

calishire · 01/03/2024 22:46

@Langsdestiny OMG. I did say to my husband now the flies have passed (just in the last few days), I wonder if they'll be another hatching 😭😭😭

reluctantbrit · 01/03/2024 23:11

We had the same as @calishire . In winter, in the dining room.

The flies were awful, the pest control guy said either pulling up all floorboards or waiting it out.

We had windows open all day, the french doors on a regular basis to get rid of the flies and scented reeds to make going in doable.

@petitdonkey do you have a chimney breast in the room? it could be a dead bird or squirrel.

WardrobesAreFull · 01/03/2024 23:19

We had this and it was a dead mouse 🤢

Have you tried pulling out literally everything in the room to see if you can find it? Eventually we found ours behind the books on the bookshelf. It may not be under the floorboards or behind the walls.

petitdonkey · 01/03/2024 23:26

Omg sorry you’ve had the same! I’ll pull everything out tomorrow but it’s a newish house- no chimney breast or floorboards- I’ve looked under the bed etc. just want it gone by the time she’s home for Easter- is SO pungent 🤮

Defintiely remove everything, books, ornaments, empty drawers and wardrobes.
