Beth Rigby of Sky News says they've been reliably informed it's not going to be about a General Election, so what will it be?

They are shifting the Overton window to label all protest as 'extremism'.

Many people don’t get their news through the BBC, I do but many don’t. It will be headline news tomorrow. Many don’t want the full speech nor care. The educational attainment of the demo graph of MN is I would hazard way above the national average.

How many people here mix across a wide spectrum of people? most don’t. Birds of a feather flock together and all that.

The comments on Rishi's speech in the the Daily Mail read pretty much like those on here e.g. 'That was a waste of a podium'.

justasking111 · 01/03/2024 18:20

Why do I feel that it's all been ignored until "democracy" aka MPs and their families were threatened . mmm

Misuse of a lectern I'd say.

It's all been ignored until the Tories started losing every by election.

Well it does help if you don't hold up death threats to Jews on your placards (people can translate Arabic - I'm not even Jewish).

piscofrisco · 01/03/2024 18:23

What a load of old tosh.

The target audience was the many many poor white nationals and decent immigrants who see the shit show the country has become. Not the Londonistas but the people who they see as stupid and racist. You know - ordinary people. The ones that object to the systematic rape of underage poor white girls, the ones who can't walk through London on a Saturday Incase they look too Jewish, the ones who object to the 15 new Turkish barbers in town, but never a Turk or a barber in any of them. Oh and those who object to modern slaves both existing and doing their low level jobs, in nail bars, car washes, Uber driving and security work.

Spot on. Well said.

captainsudoku · 01/03/2024 18:25

He didn't label all protestors as extremist. He said people had a right to protest, but there were small groups of extremists on these protests, and their views and banners etc were not ok.

IClaudine · 01/03/2024 18:28

What a load of divisive waffle that speech was. It will help matters not one jot. Nor will it help the Tories out of the deep shit they are in.

I live in a town much like you describe. He does not speak to or for me.

Echobelly · 01/03/2024 18:30

@NecessaryNC24 - as I've said, they should arrest people who do that. Not ban protests. They are using a sledgehammer to try to shut down any protests they don't like, using Palestine as an excuse, but they will mean any protest they don't like or that justifiably protests government policy.

EcstaticMarmalade · 01/03/2024 18:32

Well that’s one way to get an extra party political broadcast in before the next election.

BarelyLiterate · 01/03/2024 18:24

They're scared of the Turkish barbers, sweat shops.

HMRC officials have been staying in a local premier Inn, quizzing local small businesses for the last two weeks here. VAT, wages and tax returns.

I can guarantee that they won't touch the barbers, nail bars

If you're that bothered about democracy, Rishmeister, you could give us a FUCKING ELECTION.

What a waste of space that man is.

And inadvertently bigging up George Galloway, who is now reveling in the attention.

Sunak is rubbish at politics.

But what action was announced in that speech that would do anything about any of that?

RoseAndRose · 01/03/2024 18:39

"I despise the PM"

Just got that as a news pop up

JessS1990 · 01/03/2024 18:42

Did Sunak announce that he has suddenly found an interest in democracy, so having seen it in action in Rochdale as an unelected unaccoutable PM he is going to call a General Election and then resign?

JessS1990 · 01/03/2024 18:43

Echobelly · 01/03/2024 18:17

To save time could we label all speeches by Sunak in Downing Street as extremism?

user1984778379202 · 01/03/2024 18:44

So to protect democracy he's going to usher in a police state by stealth? He's basically repeated Lee Anderson's sentiments of last week – yet he got the whip removed. If any group is responsible for creating division in this country, it's the Tories. Cannot bloody wait for the GE.

(The way Sunak talks also makes my ears curl. So wooden and insincere, talking like he's addressing a room of toddlers. He's got as much charisma as a broom.)

Naptrappedmummy · 01/03/2024 18:45

‘I’m worried about democracy because somebody else won the (democratic) by election’ 🤦🏼‍♀️

Actually I think this is exactly what people need to be told, especially the intolerable left who will not listen to two sides of any debate. Their way or the highway. Well done Rishi. This is exactly what people need to be told. 👏 👏

Sadly I can’t disagree with you
