Beth Rigby of Sky News says they've been reliably informed it's not going to be about a General Election, so what will it be?

A PM installed by a coup, advocating democracy whilst rejecting the democratic mandate of the people of Rochdale.

"I say this to the police: We will back you when you take action"
There are now less police officers per capita than when the Tories came to power.

Sunak commits to acting to prevent people entering the country "who undermine this country".
They could have committed to this 14 years ago.

Is he saying that he is going to turn Truss around when she comes back from fraternising with some of her fellow flat earthers in the US?

''@Kdtym10

I think you’re right about the failure of multiculturalism which has been largely interpreted as get rid and criticise anything British and adjust everything to tie into minority cultures. We need to be a lot more through in protecting British Culture. Most other countries manage that.''

What is 'British Culture' and 'British' in 2024 though?

The issue I have with this type of rhetoric is that it always implies that British culture can only be the usual white/Christian type and conveniently forgets that many people who are born in the UK are not that.

This country has always had immigrants who brought in different cultures and added them to the mix.

Not to mention the fact that Britain as an Empire happily invaded other nations and really can't complain or act surprised if some of the people of these countries came to settle here.

I am all for not allowing illegal immigration but the UK, just like the USA, has a multicultural society. That is not going to change.

Someone has chillingly predicted on X that this speech could be a precursor to him saying it's not safe to hold a general election because of extremism threats.

Excellent point

He did once lose an election to someone who was outlasted by a lettuce, let us not forget that triumph of Sunak's.

I am sure another highlight of his career is sitting next to his then boss in parliament whilst said boss lied about the illegal parties they both attended.

They are shifting the Overton window to label all protest as 'extremism'.

I hope the Overton window does move, because it would be long overdue. This country needs a much more open & honest debate about the serious social problems caused by divisive multiculturalism, religious extremism and by uncontrolled mass immigration of people who do not accept secular democracy, free speech & pluralism.

How is he proof that racial minorities can succeed? He's a billionnaire and he went to winchester. #bollokcs

His parents were solidly middle class, his father was a GP, his mum a pharmacist. Similar incomes to lots of those on MN who prioritise private education. His enormous wealth came later, mainly by marriage.

MushMonster · 01/03/2024 19:03

I watched his speech now.
I agree with what he said, but I already knew all of that.
I actually was wondering if our politicians have any common sense, after getting to call each other names in Parlament. I do hope they do listen to their own words.

I think all the self flagellation over empires is a case in point. So many other countries have done this yet it always seems to be Britain who were terrible. Britain has been invaded, Britons have been slaves. It’s trendy, often ill informed. Where is all the Britain is great - look at what we have achieved - no where.

What is being British, is about equality, yes we have a largely Christian framework for the past 2 millennia, it’s shaped our laws, morals and art snd should be taught in depth (not necessarily as fact but so people have a common understanding of what shaped British society).

27Mankinis · 01/03/2024 19:08

I think it was a good and solid speech. A speech about democracy and integration. About values and about integrity. About what we want our future to be.

I don't care if he is a billionaire by marriage. That is a distraction, IMO.

I think if RS is given a proper chance he will end up being a very great PM. But he wont be given a proper chance. For many many reasons.

Oh God, if that's the case, we might as well roll up the sidewalks and call it a day. We're done for. We sooo desperately NEED that election.

Yes. It's chilling to think that the Govt could use the extremism and division which their politicians persistently fan as an agenda to postpone the GE.

He's so bloody patronising in his presentation - like he's addressing five-year olds

Have entirely missed this and still not sure what it was about, reading this very amusing thread. But just wanted to interject that whenever I see Rishi Sunak I think tech company promotional video.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/03/2024 19:15

Well yes, I wonder if Starmer gets a right of reply

I should think he’s quite glad to have a distraction from the farce labour managed in Rochdale. He probably wouldn’t mind if the GE is delayed so they can try to sort their shit out.

Scirocco · 01/03/2024 19:18

If Sunak wants an end to extremism and hate in this country, he should call a General Election so we can get rid of him and his cronies, have a democratically elected government and in doing so get rid of some of the main perpetrators of spreading and normalising extreme views and hatred.

I think that's purely because you're listening to what they say in the UK. I'm sure if you did some research you could find out what the French, Belgians, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese think about their history/empires. Russia is currently trying to recreate theirs (in Ukraine, and previously other former USSR states) because Putin can't get over lost glories. Doesn't seem that heroic, really.

Wasntmeanttobelikethis · 01/03/2024 19:28

Why do I find all his speeches so boring and uninspiring
i cannot remember much he said; something about the protests becoming a problem and he might do something about it, not sure what
i think he was trying to divert from George Galloway, but failed miserably
We want an election!!!!!

justasking111 · 01/03/2024 19:28

We don't actually know for sure who's sending all the hate emails, tik tok etc. any country with an agenda could be stirring up cyber hate

Mob rule? Extremists trying to tear us apart?
