Anyone know the process for getting a passport in an emergency for a bereavement overseas?

Sorry to hear about your bereavement.

A few years ago the procedure was to go to Newport and they would do it for you that same day but it's probably changed since Covid. Sorry I can't be more helpful maybe someone has done this quite recently.

You don't want an emergency travel document - that is for when you are already abroad and need to get home.

You ideally want a next day appointment - assuming it's an adult renewal, and you have the old passport. Ring them on the number from the link above.

OR: Do you have a different ID card or passport that is valid for where you want to go? Travel on that, and sort out getting back into the uk later.

Thank you. It’s for a friend.
It's such a huge shock though, it’s hard to think straight!

You want to ring the helpline and tell them it's for a bereavement they will require evidence to be sent over and will try to get the passport to your friend in time for them to get to the funeral or whatever they need.
