Best coffee machine for my bedroom...

GlitteryEars · 29/02/2024 17:18

...I know that, that may be a little odd. But I am not a morning person and I need coffee as soon as possible to start the day.

I'm about to split from husband and he makes me coffee and brings it up to me. So I need a coffee machine in my bedroom then I will have no need for a man anymore!! Haha.

I'm terrible at choosing these things. What will make me a nice coffee quickly in the morning?...with no need for milk in my bedroom.

Thanks

I'm a bit of a coffee snob, and I don't like the UHT milk that comes in the pots or sachets, BUT I love my milky coffees from my tassimo machine. If you like coffee mate you'll be absolutely fine with the tassimo milky drinks IMO.

Have also had drinks from a dolce gusto and enjoyed them too.

I don't think a regular flask would keep a coffee hot enough overnight, but I will await your verdict!

Salter EK2408 One Cup Coffee Maker – Personal Filter Coffee Machine, Washable & Reusable Filter, Includes 420ml Stainless Steel Travel Cup, Brew Single Serve Coffee In 3-4 Mins, Use Ground/Coffee Pads amzn.eu/d/2drLfJa

This makes coffee really quickly. Has been perfect for me. It does splash so be sure to use a tall cup in it if not using the one it comes with.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/02/2024 23:56

Lots of good suggestions here... but, isn't anyone curious as to why you'd split from a partner who brings you coffee in bed? 🤦‍♀️

IHateLegDay · 01/03/2024 00:14

I have a Nespresso and it's amazing but doesn't include the milk. Would you consider a mini fridge?

IclimbedSnowdon · 01/03/2024 00:19

I have a Tassimo Suny, ideal for a bedroom. You can get milk/cream pods and so many different types of coffee pods, and hot chocolate pods.

ODFOx · 01/03/2024 00:33

Wait a minute.
Someone brings you fresh coffee as you wake each morning and you are looking to replace them with a pod machine?
Is he so odious that you couldn't keep him on as coffee provider, household cleaning sharer and platonic cohabitee?
If not, consider replacing him with another house share coffee person. I suspect that half ground bean instant in pods (though tasty) isn't what you need.
Don't switch to pod if you can get the real thing! I say this as someone who drinks half ground instant most days. I like it, but if you're used to real coffee, pods and half ground instant us not the same.
I'm so sorry, but if good coffee is what you need, a machine won't fix it. You need a new minion.

Thursa · 01/03/2024 00:35

I miss my Tassimo so much. Can’t get them in America…

I wish someone would invent a plug in/battery charged flask that would actively keep milk cold for something like a couple of days. That would be amazing for having upstairs, but also for when you might be away/picnic/hiking/camping. You can get portable espresso makers for such situations, but can't add frothy milk without a way to keep the milk cold. (i know, this isn't quite what you are looking for, but if we're adding to coffee machine wish lists....!).

However - would a mini cosmetics fridge work for keeping the milk cold? It would much nicer having fresh coffee and adding real milk, and wouldn't be too much of a faff.

You wouldn't want that in your bedroom though, as it would be far too noisy. Refrigerators are surprisingly loud when they're the only sound in the room.

sashh · 01/03/2024 03:49

I have a tassimo. Mine is in my spare bedroom that I use as an office.

When I first got it I got a selection of 'T discs' (the pods tassimo use) from Amazon to try the different flavours. My council recycle them.

Get a jug of water to keep with it as you will forget to fill it up the night before.

The milky drinks have powdered milk / creamer in them.

@Leafbuds a vacuum flask would do that. Well for 24 hours. You can get those mini fridges that just hold a couple of cans of drink.

I dearly wish some manufacturer would bring out a modern one and solve the 'fresh milk needed' problem-I'd snap one up!

They are still made.

The milk 'problem' can be solved by freezing your milk in an ice cube tray, each night put a few milk cubes in a jug.

My parents had one, Then one morning they woke up in a room filled with smoke and it was binned.

Dontsparethehorses · 01/03/2024 04:08

I had a tassimo in my bedroom for this exact reason but I never really rated the coffee (hot chocolate was ok at a push) so swapped it for Nespresso machine and the coffee is so much better! I’ve never found a milk solution I’m 100% happy with but sounds like you would be fine with powdered- I’m intrigued by frozen milk cubes but I’m not sure I’m organised enough to remember but might be worth trying!

I thought those little cosmetic fridges were designed to be in bedrooms? I've never used one though, so I have no idea how noisy they are!!

Yes maybe 24 hours would be OK in a flask, but it would be nice to have a whole weekend - I'd have thought an actively chilled travel cup would be something that would be useful for various uses, but maybe most people would have access to fridges or whatever if needed. But a normal thermos sized flask, with a battery powered active chilling function, doesn't sound too hard to invent?! Maybe chilling uses more power than I think though or needs refrigeration chemicals etc and that would get complicated/eco nightmare. Any time I've tried to look it up, I see ones that look like they are what I want, then it turns out the battery is just in the lid to measure the temperature of the flask, not to actively chill it.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 01/03/2024 08:50

Chilling things is actually really complicated. It is much easier to heat something up.

Compress and hear a gas (often a HFC which replaces CFCs)
Pump this hot gas through the radiator cooling the gas to a liquid, still at high pressure.
Where you want the cooling effect drop the pressure of the liquid, which turns the high pressure liquid into a low pressure gas, cooling the surrounding area
This then goes back to the start.

Not easy to do in a small hand hand device and the outside of the cup would be hot so you would need thick insulation and it soon stops being practical.

Leafbuds · 01/03/2024 09:24

thanks, that makes sense and I can see why this isn't an invention already! I had a feeling there would be complications involved.

sashh · 01/03/2024 09:27

Maybe you could rig something up with those ice packs you get that you squeeze and they go cold. So a container with the milk in, then a bigger container that you could put a couple of ice packs around.

Sort of like a hay box.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 01/03/2024 09:35

Or just a small thermos to take the milk up with you the night before might be easier?

I hear you, OP. I'm a morning tea drinker, I need my mug of tea first thing in the morning, plus I have limited mobility so don't really want to hobble down the stairs for it.

I have a small kettle in our bedroom, and take a mug with teabag, sugar and milk in it, along with a teaspoon, the night before. Then, in the morning, I switch the kettle on to boil while I'm using the loo (pee before tea 😅). The mugs I use have a lid on them, which holds the used teabag after I've made my cuppa. Then I sit in bed enjoying my tea while I surf, read news etc.

I don't know if it's because I'm in Scotland, or also because we only ever use skimmed milk, but I've never found leaving milk in the (covered) mug overnight a problem, even in summer. My tea always tastes fine in the morning. 🤷‍♀️

I hope you find a suitable machine for your morning coffee, OP. Wishing you a happy, new, husband free life. 🙂

Anyone considering a Teasmade, please don't do it! In a fit of nostalgia DH bought one. The clock face illumination was so bright that aeroplanes from the local airport were using it to guide them down the runway. And the noise! By the the time it came to the boil, gurgling and spitting, it then decanted the water at full volume into the teapot. Then, the alarm sounded. There was no need for an alarm I'd been away for hours listening to it come to a boil.
Hideous thing! We gave it away.

My dad used to have one on his bedside and after it stopped working he cleaned it and binned the jug and for some reason known only to him decides to keep it as a weird shelf/storage caddy. So weird Confused

DrSpartacular · 29/02/2024 21:28

If you have a decent coffee maker downstairs, can you not just make one how you like it the night before and keep it in a flask overnight? As long as you pre-warm the flask, it'll be hot in the morning!

This, apparently a decent insulted flask or cup should keep the internal temperature as it is for about 12 hours. Just add milk when ready to drink

UnctuousUnicorns · 01/03/2024 09:47

Seriously, how hot do some people have their bedrooms overnight?! Milk in a covered vessel, in an unheated bedroom, in the UK, doesn't turn to yoghurt overnight. Do some of you live in really hot countries?

ThisSideOfTheLight · 01/03/2024 10:08

I do live in a country that gets very hot in the summer. Milk issue is solved by a mini chilly bottle. Keeps the milk lovely and chilled with minimal fuss.

QuestionableMouse · 01/03/2024 10:09

A lot of the (plastic) pods can't be recycled so are terribly wasteful.

Why not just a kettle and either a pour over with ground coffee or a jar of really nice instant?

GlitteryEars · 01/03/2024 10:14

@QuestionableMouse I hate instant coffee! What I'm going to do is make it in the evening using basic cafetier and put it in a quality flask and take upstairs and put on my bedside table ready for the morning! ☺️ Then I will go on my exercise bike (currently down stairs, but will bring it up to my bedroom) before my kids have woken up. So I get caffeine and endorphins to get through the day.

What I hadn't really considered when thinking of a coffee machine was the noise...I can't risk it waking up the kids.

Dolce Gusto - i have one in my home office. It's budget friendly and there are a ton of pods to choose from. You can get flat white, latte etc that include the milk. Its compact so doesn't take up too much space and doesn't emit lots of steam which can contribute to condensation and mould build up.

Go for the one with a larger water tank. I have the Genio S Plus and it does 2 cups before needing refilled.
