Just watching his documentary, Stranger in my own skin, very sad but I had no idea how poetically talented he was he was, or anything about his upbringing…

He would have been the type of person I’d have grown up thinking was a bit of a scary waste of space due to my own parents generational narrow mindedness…

Anybody that didn’t act and live as they did was someone to be cautious off and whisper about. It’s left me now as a much more tolerant (and non prejudiced) adult being really interested in peoples lives that differ from my own.

Pete grew up in a very strict military family, behind the wire where all adults were in uniform and lived a very regimented and rule filled lives, for him to grow up and stand out as a creative alternative soul would have been really difficult and it’s incredible to think the fame he found almost instantly..

He also has a degree in English Lit.

Of course drugs/heroin took hold and there were a lot of dark time for him but (I’m not at the end of the documentary yet) I think he comes out the other side.

Did anyone see him and band live? What were your thought on him back in the day?

Hmm. PD stepping over the body a man who'd just been thrown off of his (PD's) balcony then running away laughing has always kind of blinded me to any so-called talent he is purported to have.

If Pete Doherty as given up drugs I'll eat my hat. He has been hugely irresponsible as a result of his addiction, especially the multiple instances of drunk /drug driving.

Met him once, awful chap.

He might be a sensitive damaged soul etc but that guy is dead.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/02/2024 14:01

He has given up drugs. He's put a fair bit of weight on, as ex addicts often do, but I believe he has stopped the drugs.

One of my favourite bands. Going to see the libertines in October which will be my 8th time I think. They have a certain charisma that I can't explain. Watching him and Carl Barat together is magical! Pete is super talented but a lost soul. Surprised he's still alive to be honest having read his autobiography which is harrowing. I have a very vanilla life in comparison!

HemlockSoup · 29/02/2024 14:03

his talents as a poet are so exaggerated.

people love mythologising the Petes of this world, no one more so than Pete himself.

Yes, this.

I didn’t think he came across at all well in the Louis Theroux doc last year. I think he might have some talent but I’ve never seen him as the genius that some seem to think he is (including PD himself).

The Louis Theroux documentary had some definite moments where it was hinted or suggested that he might be taking/going to be taking drugs or if you're being very generous...he was not aghast at the idea of them being used directly around him. He was openly drinking alcohol so he's almost definitely not 100% clean & sober.

I don't think he came out well in the aforementioned documentary. Self-absorbed and self-pitying was my take. His wife didn't seem full of joy, either.

I'd be interested to watch the documentary that the OP has mentioned, though.

HemlockSoup · 29/02/2024 14:12

He's lucky he has his wife and her generous parents allowing them to live in one of their properties.

takemeawayagain · 29/02/2024 14:44

I always just thought 'junkie narcissist'. Every time he opens his mouth he just sounds like a bit of a twat.

LakeTiticaca · 29/02/2024 14:46

My son served on the military base where Dohertys father was a commanding officer. Doherty was banned from setting foot on the base 😉

Elderflower14 · 29/02/2024 16:25

All I know about him is that his husky dogs were always getting out when he lived in Margate.. It was always "Oh they are Pete's dogs" like that made it alright!! 🤔 🤔

This. What a coward.
