Is where you live safe?

I keep thinking about safety in our local area and it feels pretty dire.

We have muggings, stabbings and burglaries often. It makes me so uncomfortable raising my child here.

We are considering moving but no idea where. We currently live in Essex but I work in London so need to be able to get into London but I have a colleague who commutes in from Birmingham so it shows it's manageable.

Is your area safe and where (roughly) is it please.

Im in Norfolk in a market town with not the best reputation but i feel safe here.

I'm in Ealing, in London. Like anywhere there are dodgier bits and nicer bits and we are in a nicer bit that borders a slightly dodgy bit! I never feel unsafe and I think the main reason for that is there are always lots of people around even late at night and tube stations, shops and cab offices open until late, so there would always be people to turn to for help. I have two teenage daughters and they both go out and about alone and with friends and know where to avoid and what to do if they feel unsafe. So I agree with other posters, some parts of London are on balance safe places to live and raise children.

Town in Northamptonshire, bit rough but OK where I live. I don't tend to go out after dark anyway when most of the antisocial behaviour takes place.

North Norfolk on the edge of a rural village and very safe, low crime.

I get more hassle from a muntjac deer who insists on visiting my garden!

I live in Tunbridge Wells. Very safe and great place for families. Children always out at night and never worry about them.

foodtoorder · 01/03/2024 16:52

Confidently say very very safe however we are 2.5hours on the train from Waterloo.
Although even an hour or so along the Exeter to Waterloo line will be safer than it sounds like where you are.

Yes. I live in the Lakes. There's the usual petty crime in the towns and obviously people have shotguns and occasionally use them, but generally it's very quiet. Parking and littering crimes are the biggest issue!

Village in County Durham, annoying peacock roams around pecking on car doors, feels safe at night when he's gone to bed😁

I live in Central Bristol and it's pretty rough. More drugs/ prostitution/ sometimes quite aggressive begging than burglaries and violent crimes though. There's knife crime but it's generally between rival gangs over drug deals/ turf wars etc than directed at residents. I feel pretty safe really although there are areas I'd avoid if walking alone.

Back in around 2006 - 2010 I was living on Stapleton Road in Bristol which at the time was in all the papers frequently as the UK's 'most dangerous street' - from memory this was based on official data showing more crime per square metre annually than any other road 😬. Now THAT was rough!

I love Bristol but wouldn't recommend for safety unless you can afford Clifton or one of the other nicer bits 🙂

Small village,in Staffordshire, very safe. But the amount of new housing being built is making the traffic worse and I don’t feel that safe driving now.But happy to walk around any time of the day or night.I moved from Birmingham, now that was rough!

Tel12 · 01/03/2024 17:26

Not all of Essex is like that. There's lots are small towns are rural or semi rural areas within commuting distance. Get a map and have a day or two out and see what's on your doorstep.

zingally · 01/03/2024 17:35

I'm in a large town in the midlands. The area I'm in is lovely, and I've always felt very safe.
Of course, there is occasionally the odd little bit of petty crime and antisocial behaviour, but nothing major.
There are certainly parts of my town that I wouldn't walk through at night though.

Natsku · 01/03/2024 17:43

Where I live is safe, I have zero fear walking around at night by myself. There's some crime but mostly related to drugs rather than random violent crime.
But its a small town in Finland, so not much help to you! Whenever I think about moving to a city for better work opportunities and more social stuff, I think about how I don't want to give up this nice safe area.

Pickingmyselfup · 01/03/2024 17:55

I would say so, I'm happy to walk around in the dark, we've not had any trouble and nobody has ever broken in.

There are bits of my area which are dodgier, one direction from mine up to the shop and school is fine but the other direction towards the town centre I would not want to be walking on my own late at night. Some other suburb bits are also a bit questionable.

You can never really tell though, I grew up in a small rural village and yet we got broken into. I've left my back door open (actually open) all day here and nothing was touched even though the gate wasn't locked. Not that I would recommend it wherever you live!
