Accidentally used very old nasal spray

I'm prescribed Flixonase (steroid nasal spray), for polyps. I stopped using it in October as I kept getting nasal infections. I was referred to ENT but have heard nothing yet.

Lately my nose has been so blocked, making me wake in the night with an extremely dry mouth and throat and needing lots of water.

I take three different kinds of antihistamine daily.

I've restarted the nasal spray as I just can't cope, but I'm not sure whether I accidentally picked up an old one (in date but would have been open for months) or the one I opened yesterday. Logically I know I must have thrown old ones away, but I can't be sure.

The packet says to use within 2 months of opening and googling leads me to stories of life-threatening bacterial infections from contaminated sprays.

I won't take this one again and (if it wasn't the one I opened yesterday), it will only be two sprays in each nostril I've used.

I'm going to open the last remaining one tonight and throw away the other.

How much should be worried?

I honestly wouldn't worry, I've done the same loads of times which nasal sprays. Sometimes a year later. I'm still alive.

Just get rid of old one, you be fine

Broodywuz · 28/02/2024 15:34

I really would not be worried about this, you'll be fine

TheShellBeach · 28/02/2024 15:35

I've done this before and lived to tell the tale!

I have that on prescription. I really wouldn’t worry. The main thing with steroids is they tend to become less potent past their use by date. It’s such a small amount I’m sure it will be okay.

Good lord, this wouldn't worry me at all.
