If Nigel Farage became leader of the Tory party….

Would it help their electoral chances ?
Apparently there’s a rumour circulating that Tory MPs want to orchestrate a coup and replace Sunak with him as he’s seen as catnip to certain voters and would improve their abysmal chances of winning the next GE. If you’re a disillusioned Tory voter would you be tempted to vote for them with Nige at the helm ? And red wall Brexiteers, would it influence a return to Labour, either way ?

@DontLeanOnTheKeyboard
5 years until I can leave this pathetic little britain small b. It’s horrific.
Why wait 5 years, go now or are you locked up - any chance you can be let out of your institution earlier?

Nigel Farage won't become leader of the conservative party and they will not win the next GE because we need the next generation to experience a socialist government.

5 years later, the conservatives will return (without NF).

I think you are bang on there. With Blair/Brown being the anomaly, it tends to be the way of things.

"If NF is made head of the Tory party it's all to play for and KS will, quite frankly, crap himself."

How & when do you see this happening before the next election?

Farage would need to be made an MP (there are safe seats around somewhere), but then get waved through a leadership campaign (he won't, there are quite a few competitors lining up).
Why would Sunak delay an election to benefit Farage?

Honestly, I don't see it happening. I see that the Tories will lose, but possibly not as badly as all the predictions would currently have us believe. Unless NF decides to head up Reform, in which case the Tories will lose very badly indeed.

But, theoretically, if NF were to somehow magically become head of the Tory party before the next GE, that will be Labour's worst, worst nightmare come true. I think we'd be looking at a coalition. Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage. Can you imagine?

Farage is also only good at opposition politics. He never holds power so never has to define what he's for, rather than what he's against.

And also - Tory party leader choice is about who donors like as much as who voters like. Not many people would want to be publicly associated with farage.

Kendodd · 29/02/2024 21:07

For all those saying it would never happen, Tory voters/electorate generally would never fall for it, I have one word for you - Brexit. Everyone thought the electorate were to smart to vote for that as well.

Make somone who cannot win a seat as an MP the party leader? Definitely asking for trouble. Yes, he has some followjng and a good campaigner, (so was Boris) it takes more rhan that to keep a party and the nation united.

When he was and MEP he barely turned up and did absolutely nothing. The man's a shill.

I don't believe even the Tories would be mad enough to elect Farage as leader of the party.

Having lived through the last 14 years I'm afraid I don't think there is any madness that the Tories aren't capable of.

Me neither. It's not even worth considering.
