If Nigel Farage became leader of the Tory party….

Would it help their electoral chances ?
Apparently there’s a rumour circulating that Tory MPs want to orchestrate a coup and replace Sunak with him as he’s seen as catnip to certain voters and would improve their abysmal chances of winning the next GE. If you’re a disillusioned Tory voter would you be tempted to vote for them with Nige at the helm ? And red wall Brexiteers, would it influence a return to Labour, either way ?

Given Farage can’t even win a single parliamentary seat for himself, what on earth makes any Tory thinks he’s electoral catnip? Sunak has at least managed to become a sitting MP, Farage hasn’t even managed that.

Startingagainandagain · 29/02/2024 08:52

Well, the Tories have been courting Fascism for quite a while now with things like the insane Rwanda scheme so I am sure some of them would love Farage as their leader.

Farage is a self-serving nasty, privileged little man who lied his way through the Brexit campaign: so perfect Tory MP material.

I can't wait to see them all thrown out of power and sink into oblivion at the next general election...

Malarandras · 29/02/2024 08:53

I think he has to be a member of the party before he can become its leader. And according to Nigel that’s incredibly unlikely.

No, because Conservative Party members loathe him. It would be electoral suicide. Members are still disgusted with members that defected to UKIP.

IClaudine · 29/02/2024 09:11

The Tories would lose their last remaining moderate voters if Farage was at the helm. Thankfully, most decent people despise him.

SomersetTart · 29/02/2024 09:13

Surely this rumour is being spread for one or two reasons only.

To create a diversion from the compound failures of the Tory party.

and

When Farage doesn't get the job, the self serving, millionaire muppet they put up instead looks vaguely sensible so that people will go, 'Phew' and vote for him/her. Just like after that clown Johnson people were willing to back Truss (briefly).

LolaSmiles · 29/02/2024 09:14

This gives me some hope.
For transparency I'm not a conservative voter, but I've been looking on baffled by the swing of the party to the right over time and keep clutching to the tiniest bit of hope that at some point the moderate conservatives might get a hold of their party again before the UK overton window is dragged even further to the right.

NoCloudsAllowed · 29/02/2024 09:16

No, for all the nasty bigots they'd gain, they would lose a lot of moderate Tories. That's their problem, they cover mutually incompatible demographics.

Plus I'm pretty sure there is a lot that could be levelled at Farage - he wasn't the main target of political campaigns before, he used to sing Nazi songs at school and was a member of the British Front. I'm sure there's other unpleasant stuff about him that could come out.

hattie43 · 29/02/2024 09:19

Reform is on the rise with voters . Higher vote numbers than the Lib Dem's ( who are they )

I think there is a huge amount of disillusionment in the way the country is , no real difference between Labour / Tory so people are looking elsewhere.

I don't think people who'd vote for him would be too bothered

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 29/02/2024 09:24

Hasn't Farage repeatedly failed to get elected as an MP? Hardly a sure bet, is he?!

The Tory Party has swung so far to the right now that it wouldn't surprise me if the membership elected Farage as their leader. The Tory moderates wouldn't be able to tolerate this, so I guess they would have to form their own breakaway party, unless they defected to one of the others.

I genuinely don't think the electorate as a whole would be stupid enough to elect a Farage-led party. Then again, I didn't think they would be stupid enough to vote for Brexit and here we are.

If we did end up with Farage as PM, that would be the last nail in the coffin for me. We'd have to leave.

Fizbosshoes · 29/02/2024 09:26

My dad voted for brexit....but afterwards said he didn't really know what he was voting for (not entirely unreasonable given the lies that were used in the campaign) I asked if he would vote the same again given the chance, and he said yes probably because he'd be dead before it has any proper impact anyway! (And he was right)

But yeah thanks dad. What about your children and GC?? Confused

Ilovemyshed · 29/02/2024 09:28

I'll believe anything after BoJo, Truss and the trump farce in the US

placemats · 28/02/2024 17:08

A lot of Tory voters are going to vote reform. Word on the doorstep.

Which will mean Labour gets in. Thats how the system works.

LittleWeed2 · 29/02/2024 09:37

Possible because I think it’s the members of the cons party (small number compared to the past I think) who vote and they voted in Truss over Sunsk last time - racist imv. I also think the press are racist as they seem to criticise Sunak constantly when the probs that we have built up over 10 years of a poor economy. Not sure what magic wand Sunak is supposed to wave - he doesn’t have the charisma need to whip the other MPs into shape but nor had Truss.
Nor has Farage, you love or hate him. He’s a busted flush imv.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/02/2024 09:44

Ffs. The Tories go from bad to worse.

newnamethanks · 29/02/2024 09:44

Nigel loves himself but how many times has he tried and failed to get elected? 5? Only swivel eyed loons want Farage and surely the Tories won't try to foist him into the leadership? Electoral death, final nail in coffin.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/02/2024 09:48

He does love himself and anyway he's a one trick pony, without intellectual depth.

The Tory party have definitely moved to the right, and are straining to go further. As for the NHS, you must think we're all stupid. They've fucked it, as planned, and partly behind the scenes.

I don't believe even the Tories would be mad enough to elect Farage as leader of the party

The party is dominated by the right now, of course it would.

It elected the ludicrous Truss.

Diefrausagtnein · 29/02/2024 09:52

@hattie43 I think there’s a big difference between Labour and the Tories. How are their policies the same ? One’s been in power for 14 years and done nothing of note apart from wreck public services and turn us into a laughing stock. The other will have to pick up the mess and cut their cloth accordingly, no big inspirational policies because financially we’re buggered. I’m sick of posters saying they’re the same. Starmer can’t win. He’s either a socialist bent on stealing our property and turning us into Venezuela or a red Tory who idolises Thatcher and wants to starve children …

No one in their right mind would vote for Farage”

Therein lies the problem 🤪

TheLeadbetterLife · 29/02/2024 10:06

People seem to have forgotten that Farage pulled this exact same trick in 2019. He'll pull Reform out at the last minute, just like he did with the Brexit party. It's a stunt to keep himself on the telly and money coming into his bank account. More fool any voter who falls for it.

Tice is leader of Reform UK (Farage is honorary president, whatever that means). I don't think he'll do what Farage did in 2019 as there is nothing in it for him or his party. In 2019 there was the little matter of getting Brexit done.

TheLeadbetterLife · 29/02/2024 10:19

Tice was involved in the Brexit party too, it's the same bunch of shysters every time. They couldn't give two shits about the UK, or Brexit, or any of it. Their voters are useful idiots to them.

What's in it for them is money for old rope. Back then it was Brexit, now it's climate change.
