Do you live somewhere "desirable?"

Just musing as I daydream on rightmove. I live in a HA property so basically had to go where they placed me. It's not a desirable place but is sometimes described as "convenient" for the nearby cities. I guess most of the people that live in my town either do so because they can't afford to move elsewhere or have ties to the location, I don't think many outsiders would choose it if they had other options.

Do you live somewhere referred to as "desirable" and do you like it?

I live in a great little city that tourists flock to and also have countryside, great shops, schools and trains(ish) within staggering distance. We've been in the same house for 30 years.

For us, lovely considerate neighbours really help make the place. It's the little stuff that grows a community.

Yes, very. Right next to a 250 acre park in London.

Best place I've ever lived - calm, peaceful, close to the river

Loads of things to do and 14-18 minutes from central London if I wanted even more to do

I'm always shocked on here the slating London gets, it's so much better than the expensive international cities of New York, Paris - the area I live in people say hello/good morning. Probably the friendliest place I've ever lived

Richmond?

mizu · 27/02/2024 20:50

Yes, I do. In a teeny tiny house. Love it.

louderthan · 27/02/2024 20:56

Brighton. Expensive, over-populated and increasingly run down but lots of people gush about how great it must be to live there so I suppose it can be considered desirable.

peffy · 27/02/2024 21:14

Yes in Somerset on the edge of an area of outstanding national beauty.
It is lovely but house prices are insane after covid and we get pissed off with the insane amount of traffic during every bank hol, school holiday etc as people pass down to Cornwall and Devon. And the locals moan endlessly about it without realizing how lucky they are.

Interesting user name where does it come from? I went out with a Patrick and he was indeed crazy.

So did I 😂

We live in a lovely town in the Home Counties. I love living in this location, it’s just so pleasant with lots of nice places on our doorstep and so easy to get into London. However, I hate our house, it’s all we could afford here and it’s too small for us and it just looks horrible from the outside.

arlequin · 27/02/2024 21:37

lol no not desirable at all. BUT the people I've met here are just fabulous. More and more highly educated, interesting people moving to the area. Can afford so much for your money.

tryingtobenormalish · 27/02/2024 21:40

I lived in the posh side of my town for 5 long years and hated it.everyone seemed so stuck up because they lived there. And looked down their nose at anyone always gossiping about the next and how they would never live on any estates runing anyone down the list goes on .And they were so nosey.Knocking on the door for a chat or have noticed theirs a man walking around at night. FFS hes might be walking his dog or staying with family just piss off.I HATED it not my kind of people.Dont get me started with the one that lived next door to me and breathe. However after 5 long years i finally moved. Its desirable to me not to others i rent a flat now from HA on a housing estate and i LOVE IT.Trees greens walks nice little cluster of shops on my door step.No one gives a hoot what you do.Always someone to talk to if your out.Everything within a 5 min walk.
in town in 20 mins whats not to like.
It just felt normal real people it felt like home been here 3 years never had any issues and would never move again.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/02/2024 21:42

I think it's seen as one of the more posher parts of the West Midlands!

ilovebagpuss · 27/02/2024 21:45

Yes it's very scenic and popular place to live. Small but with larger towns nearby.
I personally love it especially where we live as it's so quiet.
Bit boring for the teens but we get to bigger towns on direct train.

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2024 21:45

Yes, we’re two minutes walk from a river and the biggest water meadow in England. It’s very pretty and less than an hour from London by train. The property prices reflect that unfortunately.

egowise · 27/02/2024 21:46

I live in a desirable part of somewhere none desirable

Crikeyalmighty · 27/02/2024 21:49

@Madcats are you in Bath? If so - wave to you!! I've got lovely neighbours too - nicest I've ever had- slightly mad but brainy and not snooty-

PSEnny · 27/02/2024 21:50

I do, frequently in articles as a ‘hidden gem’, very family friendly, good transport links, good schools. Post covid property prices are ridiculous and I don’t see how anyone can afford to buy here now. Even properties that need a lot of work are on for over 350K and they’re just 3 bedroom terraces. Million pound houses which was unheard of previously. I’m lucky I bought when I did. I worry that people on average incomes with no large inheritance to use as a deposit can no longer afford to live here.

tunainatin · 27/02/2024 21:51

Reasonably desirable area in a large city. It does have a lot going for it and works really well for us as a family for lots of reasons. Renting though, and couldn't afford to buy there!

Yep. Train "delay repay" claims might become taxable income if we aren't careful!

Sidebeforeself · 27/02/2024 21:59

I live in a town that’s supposed to be posh but it’s not really. However it does have some fantastic houses ( I cant afford one of them) .But I have a lovely quirky property. We have all the amenities and lovely countryside too. But we still have druggies

SeamsLegit · 27/02/2024 23:24

Yes, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ❤️ with family in every direction. I love it!

Give a clue about the business that ensures interesting people!

I’ve only ever lived in places deemed deeply desirable, and what that tells me is that ideas of desirability vary and are subjective. I loved north London, central Oxford, my little neighbourhood of Paris, NYC, Provence, various parts of Ireland, but I loathed with a passion living in Dubai and a village that had been voted in the top five places to live in the UK, and which was insular, racist and so, so dull.

Where I live now is deemed incredibly desirable (prosperous, old money riverside suburb close to city centre), but while I do like living here (lovely views, walking distance to everything, lovely old houses, nice mix of people), it’s also got a lot more drug dealing than people realise.

Music industry

beguilingeyes · 28/02/2024 11:01

I didn't used to, but I do now and I haven't moved! I live in a part of East London that's become hip as hell. We had Rick Stein here the other week. I love the palce.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/02/2024 11:19

No. But I like it. It's convenient for amenities and our specific bit is comparitivly good to it's surroundings.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/02/2024 12:12

@dinkydonky do you live in Box?? We work in music too
