Do you live somewhere "desirable?"

Just musing as I daydream on rightmove. I live in a HA property so basically had to go where they placed me. It's not a desirable place but is sometimes described as "convenient" for the nearby cities. I guess most of the people that live in my town either do so because they can't afford to move elsewhere or have ties to the location, I don't think many outsiders would choose it if they had other options.

Do you live somewhere referred to as "desirable" and do you like it?

London. I can see Canary Wharf from the top of my road. I love it x

decionsdecisions62 · 27/02/2024 18:37

Nope I live in a northern inner city. I grew up in a very desirable location in the Lake District and hated it. I love where I live now. Desirable means different things to different people.

Meadowfinch · 27/02/2024 18:39

I 'desire to live here' so that means it's desirable to me.

I live in a house, four miles from the nearest town, it has water meadows behind and common woodland to the front, with a C road. There are single track lanes and woods and footpaths to run & cycle through.

We have no buses, no shops, no street lights, no GP or dentist or school or pub or church.

We have a village hall, deer, hares, hedgehogs, owls, birds and foxes. A chalk stream with kingfishers and trout.

Some people would hate it. I love it. 🙂

I live in a place where if you weren’t born here, you either need lots of money or a permit to live and work. Five minute commute and everything in easy reach. Lots of beaches and outdoor activities, it really is an idyllic place.
BUT it’s very expensive, there is limited rental properties and travelling anywhere costs a fortune. In the summer the population increases with tourists and trying to do anything takes twice as long.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/02/2024 18:51

Yes and yes.
35 minutes to Central London, adjacent to acres of wildlife nature reserve. Best of both worlds. Feel very safe and have lovely neighbours.

MentalLoadOverload · 27/02/2024 18:51

That’s very true @Meadowfinch - we all desire different things 😀. I wouldn’t swap my bustling and slightly edgy corner of London for your place for any money, and it sounds like you would very much feel the same!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 27/02/2024 18:55

Semi-desirable and Mumsnet has mixed views on it. Area always gets suggested on here when people are looking for reasonably priced suburb with countryside feeling.
A quick google of the area states "a sprawling area of woods, heathland, and ponds, with trails for hikers and mountain bikers".
Views of the forest to the front and back and a nature reserve 10 doors down. So I love it but it's not up there with some of the areas mentioned here already.

Sounds similar. I posted before reading yours.

Apparently according to the greedy estate agents my home is in a desirable area (sorry, I despise them and partly blame them for the unbelievable jump in property prices by overvaluations during covid) We’re on the doorstep of the Peak District and on a lovely quiet cul de sac with amazing neighbours.

We have amazing access to the M1 and other important roads, and just 10 minutes away from Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire. On a sunny day it’s just stunning, with deer wandering through the grounds. The house is fascinating and the gardens are lovely, definitely worth a visit.

I live in Derbyshire. Ilkeston. 🤣

Nope, always looked down upon and sneered at. However I like living here. It is close to London, affordable, quick trains and good road links, easy access to country and coast, plus pretty much any amenities you need within a 20min drive

I think I probably live near you 😊

Quizine · 27/02/2024 18:59

My home is desirable to me. The area I live in is ordinary but nice and well kept and it is very special to me.

I have a park outside my back gate with the hills and mountains in the distance, I have a big sunny SW facing garden that isn't overlooked, I have fantastic neighbours, and all amenities within reach.

I have no intention of moving from my little house. Home is where the heart is.

Simonjt · 27/02/2024 18:59

Yes, we live in a boujie area of Stockholm, we live in an inherited house, we could never afford to buy here. We’re a 25 minute walk to central Stockholm, we get deer in the garden, the road is very quiet, zero through traffic, lovely parks, two minutes to the metro, good schools and some really nice independent businesses near by.

awitchoftroubleinelectricblue · 27/02/2024 19:04

Lol no! I live in an ex-mining village in Yorkshire. The house next door, a three-bed semi with a decent garden, sold for just £100K a couple of years ago. The area has good local amenities - police station, church, dentist, dr surgery and healthcare centre, several schools, post office, cafes, parks etc - and is close to major motorways. It's also a crime hotspot with a lot of deprivation and all of the issues that come with that.

sharingzoe · 27/02/2024 19:05

Yes, York

BroughttoyoubyBerocca · 27/02/2024 19:06

I live in a fab town in the south East, very desirable, entry level is a 2 bed terrace, without parking is around £500/600k. You can easily spend £1m for an apartment. Beautiful location, used in films/tv productions. I’m not from here but love it.

sophi1995 · 27/02/2024 19:06

The part of the city I live in isn't considered the best area but it's a very short commute to work for both my partner and I, close to my parents, close to a very good school for my children, walking distance (40 minutes) to the city center and we were able to buy a far bigger house than we would have on the posh side of the city. So it's not considered a desirable area to most people but it is the most desirable to me.

Yes. I live in apparently one of the most affluent areas in the country but it isn’t all wonderful tbf. Some drivers here can be real twats and people aren’t so friendly. It’s great though for connectivity & very close to a major international airport.

I think I live there too - but a village nearby which is lovely.

Odiebay · 27/02/2024 19:12

I do. But I didn't know that when I moved here. We just got really lucky with the area (after 2 years of looking for a house mind!).

It's a lovely village with miles of country walks and only 15 minutes to main towns.

Menomeno · 27/02/2024 19:12

I live in one of the most ‘desirable’ areas of our city. I hate it. It’s 90% wealthy pensioners/curtain twitchers. I often long to go back to the ‘rough’ area I came from, even though I know deep down I wouldn’t. I just don’t feel at home here.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 27/02/2024 19:15

Apparently, I do.

I live in a village outside of York.

We didn't choose here, just this is where our careers brought us.

York city centre is beautiful to visit. Living here is different IMO.

Public transport into the city is a joke. "get the park and ride" the park and ride is almost in the city, you might as well just keep going.

The inner city infrastructure does not cater for the amount of cars that go through it so there are always traffic jams.

And do not get me started on the tourists that stand in the middle of the road to take pictures of someone stood on a bridge.

BeyondTeddington · 27/02/2024 19:15

Yes, The Times named it the best area to live a couple of years ago. It’s ridiculously expensive to buy, but the location is great - we are sandwiched in between Busy Park and the river and have all the amenities you could wish for; and only 35 mins from Central London. Although when we moved here in 2010, it was just a kind of bog standard suburb that no-one who wasn’t local had ever heard of - it’s really changed a lot in that time.

Hatscarfgloves · 27/02/2024 19:18

For 2 years I lived in one of the apparently most desirable areas of London (Highgate). I hated it. It was boring as hell and almost all the people I met who lived there were too. And so, so, smug. It made me realise that what you need to consider is who desires it - if they are not your sort of people, it’s not your sort of place!

YouTulip · 27/02/2024 19:19

dinkydonky · 27/02/2024 17:20

Yes - large village with decent amenities in an area of outstanding natural beauty with good transport links to a small nearby city. There’s a specific local business that means there’s a lot of very interesting people in the local pub. I absolutely love it and I’m so thankful I get to live here - I wouldn’t have thought somewhere so perfect for me and my partner existed.

Give a clue about the business that ensures interesting people!

I’ve only ever lived in places deemed deeply desirable, and what that tells me is that ideas of desirability vary and are subjective. I loved north London, central Oxford, my little neighbourhood of Paris, NYC, Provence, various parts of Ireland, but I loathed with a passion living in Dubai and a village that had been voted in the top five places to live in the UK, and which was insular, racist and so, so dull.

Where I live now is deemed incredibly desirable (prosperous, old money riverside suburb close to city centre), but while I do like living here (lovely views, walking distance to everything, lovely old houses, nice mix of people), it’s also got a lot more drug dealing than people realise.

queenofthewild · 27/02/2024 19:21

I live in a desirable bit of a very undesirable town.

It's ok. It suits us. But I yearn for the sea and beautiful nature.

Yes, exactly this. One of the reasons a village I once lived in was so ghastly is that it was a ‘white flight’ destination from a nearby city, which basically meant a whole load of Brexitty neo-Thatcherites who didn’t like brown people living in the same place.
